Agartala: Tipra Motha chief and royal scion of Tripura Pradyut Kishor Manikya Debbarma on March 31, slammed Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus for his insensitive comment on Northeast India. Replying to Yunus comment Debbarma said, “Time for India to make a route to the ocean by supporting our indigenous people who once ruled Chittagong so we are no longer dependent on an ungrateful regime.”

It should be mentioned that the comment of Debbarma came in reply to the comment of Muhammad Yunus where he said that India’s Eastern states which are known as seven sisters are landlocked regions. They have no way to reach out to the ocean and ‘we are the guardians of the ocean.’

Debbarma further wrote in his X handle,”India’s biggest mistake was to let go of the port in 1947 despite the hill people living there wanting to be a part of the Indian union. Yunus may think he is the guardian of the ocean but the reality is he is a stop gap leader at the age of almost 85.”

The firebrand tribal leader further reminds the Bangladesh leader that NE is not far from Chittagong. He wrote, “Let’s not forget Tripura is only a few miles away from the port he is speaking away ….”

It should be mentioned that during the Sheikh Hasina government, India had commercial access to Chittagong port through South Tripura via the Maitri bridge. Rail communication with Bangladesh was also about to start before the August 2024 turmoil in the neighbouring country which could have resulted in better trade between the two countries. But after the rise of radical forces in the country, the Indian government is taking conscious steps in its relationship with the Yunus administration.
