Bengaluru: The political landscape of Karnataka is reeling from the explosive allegations of a honeytrap scandal that has recently surfaced, leading to heightened tensions among state ministers. The gravity of these claims has sent shockwaves through the corridors of power, creating an unforeseen crisis that could have far-reaching implications for the ruling Congress party. In the latest developments, Cooperative Minister KN Rajanna has openly admitted to falling victim to a honeytrap, igniting a firestorm of accusations and suggesting that multiple ministers may be embroiled in similar predicaments.
The sensational narrative began to unfold during the recent assembly session when Rajanna made a startling revelation about being honeytrapped. “Yes, what Rajanna said is true. Not only the cooperation minister but three more people from the State Cabinet were also honey-trapped,” reported sources quoting Rajanna
Adding to the intrigue, Rajanna claimed that a total of 48 individuals were implicated in this controversial scheme, suggesting a larger network of entrapment that transcends a single case.
In about-face moves, ministers including Rajanna have reportedly taken the matter directly to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The request for intervention signifies the seriousness of the situation, as they aim to safeguard their positions while also demanding accountability for the individuals behind the honeytrap schemes.
Adding fuel to the fire, opposition parties have seized the opportunity to lambast the ruling Congress about failing to maintain ethical governance. Key figures within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have publicly condemned the state administration, implying that such scandals are indicative of a deeper malaise affecting the political environment in Karnataka. “If ministers of the ruling party can be compromised in such a blatant manner, how can the public trust them to govern effectively?” BJP MLA Sunil Kumar questioned.
Honey trap only on CMs supporting ministers?
On March 19, Minister Sunil Kumar made a critical statement in the assembly, indicating that plans for a honeytrap were to be executed imminently. He underscored the urgency of the situation, suggesting higher stakes than previously anticipated.
Discussions regarding ministers potentially being targeted by these honeytraps have significantly raised eyebrows within the Congress. Notably, PWD Minister Sathish Jarakiholi posted a curious update that hinted at his own entanglement in a honeytrap. His comments suggest a disturbing trend, as he metaphorically described being “lit up” during a court session—implying that he too has become a victim of this elaborate scheme.
The topic of the honeytrap is expected to be revisited in depth after the assembly session concludes, with many predicting that its implications could escalate further. As discussions continue among party leaders, it is evident that the Chief Minister and his close advisors are not taking these allegations lightly, and preparations to file a formal complaint are reportedly underway.
This honeytrap scandal has already reverberated throughout state politics, prompting a wave of unrest within the Congress party. It remains to be seen how far-reaching the consequences will be and what form the fallout will take in the coming weeks. Given the party’s history of internal strife, navigating this complex situation is likely to be fraught with challenges. As more details emerge, the future of Congress in Karnataka hangs in the balance.
Vijayendra urged for CBI probe
Vijayendra has called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation into the honey trap case involving Minister KN Rajanna and others. He stated that it is unlikely for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to effectively resolve this complex case.
The current situation surrounding the honey trap has revealed that attempts to implicate politicians have become alarmingly widespread. Recognising the gravity of the situation, KN Rajanna himself raised this matter in the assembly, advocating for a CBI inquiry.
The response from fellow ministers has been one of heightened enthusiasm, with several expressing their intention to publicly address the honey trap issue in front of the media. These political developments have sparked considerable curiosity and speculation among the public and political commentators alike.
CM Siddaramaiah’s reaction
Opposition leaders R. Ashok, Araga Jnanendra, legislator Sunil Kumar, and Minister KN Rajanna raised the issue of the honeytrap in the assembly, demanding responses on the matter. They insisted that those who facilitated such acts must be removed from the cabinet, and they called for the Chief Minister to respond in order to uphold the dignity of the assembly. In response, the Chief Minister stated that there is no question of shielding anyone.
Sidda said the government has a responsibility to ensure that anyone implicated must face consequences, as mandated by law. The Home Minister indicated that if Rajanna files a complaint, a high-level investigation will be conducted, and revisiting the matter after this assurance is unnecessary. The Chief Minister asserted that regardless of who is responsible for the honeytrap, it is unequivocally wrong. He remarked, “Just because something is alleged does not mean it should be ignored.” He noted that Rajanna did not name anyone in particular; had he done so, action could have been taken. The Chief Minister reiterated that there is no question of protecting anyone involved in the case.
The allegations of honeytrap attempts involving ministers and legislators have currently caused a stir in both the Karnataka Assembly and the broader political landscape. It has been alleged that several ministers and legislators, including KN Rajanna, were targeted in these honeytrap schemes. Opposition leaders in the assembly have supported Rajanna and are demanding an investigation into these claims
