On March 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the Lok Sabha during the Budget session, praised the grand success of the Maha Kumbh 2025 held in Prayagraj. He called it a testament to India’s spiritual and national consciousness. The PM also praised the seamless execution of the huge gathering, which drew millions of devotees, sadhus, and people from around the world.
Expressing his gratitude to the dedicated “Karmyogis” who played a pivotal role in making the event a success, PM Modi described Maha Kumbh as a source of various “nectars,” with “unity” being the most sacred one. Maha Kumbh was one of those occasions when people came together from all around the nation. They set aside their caste, language, region, gender and other biases to take a holy dip in Triveni Sangam at Prayag Raj, propagating the feeling that it was never for an “I” but always for an “us”.
He emphasised that those who questioned the scale and impact of Maha Kumbh had received their answers through the overwhelming participation and spiritual awakening witnessed nationwide.
Historic Convergence of Faith and Solidarity
Emphasising the record-breaking fervour, the Prime Minister mentioned that Maha Kumbh 2025 witnessed a remarkable exhibition of national awareness, where individuals from every walks of life gathered in Prayagraj. He mentioned that the young generation welcomed the event with deep passion, enhancing the relationship between tradition and modernity even further.
PM Modi explained how Maha Kumbh had gone beyond regional, language, and social barriers to build a sense of collective consciousness. “The grandeur of Maha Kumbh is a reflection of India’s ability to unite, above differences, and to work towards a common vision,” he added.
PM Modi recalled his visit to Mauritius, when he offered holy water from the Triveni Sangam at the Ganga Talab, inspiring a strong sense of devotion among the Indian diaspora. He underlined that India’s greatest asset is its unity in diversity, and that this spirit of togetherness must be further nurtured.
Global Spectacle of Devotion
The 45-day-long Maha Kumbh, one of the world’s largest religious congregations, concluded on February 26, with over 66 crore devotees taking a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the Saraswati rivers. PM Modi himself participated in the sacred ritual at Triveni Sangam on February 5. He further highlighted how the event’s resonance reached beyond Bharat, gifting ‘Gangajal’ from Maha Kumbh to US National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard.
With ambassadors and high commissioners from 74 countries attended, delegates from over 100 countries participated in the “Mahakumbh”, demonstrating the widespread awareness of this significant spiritual gathering.
Enhancing National Consciousness Amid Global Challenges
In the midst of persisting international conflicts, PM Modi emphasised that the Maha Kumbh reflected India’s prowess in unity. He pointed out that despite divisions affecting much of the world, India remains a shining example of unity and shared heritage.
“This unity is our blessing and our strength,” he said. He also brought out the fact that during crises, India’s cultural heritage and spiritual traditions served as unifying factors. Maha Kumbh, being a congregation of the faithful, reasserted a feeling of unity and faith among millions who attended. He emphasised that these very big events showcase India’s cultural diversity to the world and re-establish the nation on its course of upholding its traditions.
Significance of “Nadi Utsav” for a Sustainable Future
PM Modi also stressed the ecological importance of Maha Kumbh, calling for a larger river conservation movement. He asked the extension of ‘Nadi Utsav’ (River Festival) to generate awareness among the younger generation regarding the need for water conservation, cleanliness, and environmental sustainability.
He pointed out that the huge turnout for the Kumbh has proved the capability of public movements in supporting sustainable development. With rivers being polluted and depleted, he emphasised that the coming generations need to be taught how to conserve water bodies. The growth of river festivals can be an important step towards rejuvenating and conserving India’s extensive river system.
He reiterated that the next generation needs to be linked with traditions like Maha Kumbh in order to comprehend the roots of Indian culture. In an increasingly modernising world, where online power is transforming lives, he underlined the need for spiritual and cultural continuity. He was filled with pride as he saw young people embracing their heritage with reverence and devotion.
The PM also referred to the fact that festivals such as Maha Kumbh are not only religious congregations but also are crucial symbols of India’s historical resilience. He said that India, with its rich cultural heritage, needs to ensure that such festivals are retained and transmitted to generations to come without dilution.
The era of National Aspirations
Drawing parallels with the pran pratishtha of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, PM Modi said that India is getting ready for the coming millennium with heightened collective awareness. He appealed to the country to regard such periods as milestones for progress and unity.
He emphasised how major national events—whether it’s the inauguration of Shri Ram Mandir or the Maha Kumbh—mirror India’s collective dreams. These events, he averred, are not symbolic but are vital in reasserting the nation’s confidence in its own spiritual and cultural identity. “The Maha Kumbh has given birth to new national pledges and has reasserted our strength. It has dispelled all doubts and fortified our confidence to scale higher heights,” he concluded.
