Patna: In a troubling development reported from Siwan district, devotees out for collecting donation for a Hanuman temple were assaulted by a group of people near Izmali mosque on March 16.

The assault led to serious injuries to a youth identified as Nitish Chauhan. The injured youth was immediately taken to a sub divisional hospital and reportedly referred to the district hospital subsequently.

A few people of Badarzimi village of Gopalganj district were out campaigning for Pachrukhi Yagya (Yajna). They were attacked by a few miscreants near Izmali mosque under the jurisdiction of Barhadiya police station leading to injuries to one person, said police.

According to media reports, the incident occurred when the devotees were on their way to Naubatganj for collecting fund for a Hanuman Mandir (temple) being built near Mirganj. The said temple is set to be inaugurated on March 20 and the workers were out for collecting funds for the proposed Pran-Pratishtha ceremony.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurred in Izmali village after people out for campaigning on motorcycles were attacked with wooden sticks and other sharp edged weapons by a group of people belonging to the other community on Sunday morning.  They alleged that they were targeted due to saffron attire and flags.

They further alleged that stones were also pelted during the assault and an announcement was also made from the nearby mosque. Though the police has denied allegations of announcement and maintained that the attack was carried out by anti-social elements.

The incident has taken place near the Gopalganj- Siwan bordering area, outraging the local Hindu community who gathered and protested against the attack, demanding swift action into the case.

The authorities on the other hand have launched an investigation into the matter and arrested three individuals in connection with the assault. Deployment of security personnel has also been made in the village in view of preventing any untoward incident in the locality. The matter is further being investigated by the police and the situation remains under control at the moment.
