This year, Holi, the festival of colours, is set to create a new and inspiring chapter in Vrindavan. The Uttar Pradesh government is leading an initiative to break a Guinness World Record, with over 2,000 widows coming together to celebrate the festival. In collaboration with Vrindavan’s social organisations, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department will host the historic ‘Widows’ Holi-2025,’ with the goal of setting the world record, officials confirmed on March 7.
While the Holi celebrations of Mathura-Vrindavan are famous worldwide, this year’s festivities will go beyond mere celebration to symbolise social harmony, cultural unity, and transformative change. The Holi of 2025 will not only bring vibrant colours to the lives of widows but also deliver a powerful message of societal transformation, leaving a lasting impact both in history and on the global stage.
‘Widows’ Holi’ is a distinctive cultural celebration. Traditionally, widows in India were expected to renounce worldly pleasures, including festive occasions like Holi. However, in Vrindavan, a city deeply associated with the divine love of Bhagwan Krishna, this celebration has become a symbol of transformative change. Widows’ Holi challenges long-standing taboos and has grown from an inclusive initiative to an iconic event embodying empowerment and equality.
Every year, thousands of widows from various ashrams in Vrindavan come together to celebrate Holi with vibrant colours, music, and devotion. This event has garnered both national and international recognition as a symbol of social change, dignity, and joy. Building on this spirit, the Yogi government now aims to elevate the celebration by securing a world record.
Officials stated that the festival would showcase traditional folk songs, dances, devotional music, and organic colours as part of the celebration. The event is expected to attract international dignitaries, media, and devotees. A dedicated team has already been assembled to ensure the successful execution of this grand occasion. Representatives from the Guinness World Records will be present to supervise and facilitate the certification process, ensuring that every detail of the record attempt is flawlessly managed.
