Two soldiers were killed when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden car into their convoy in the Eidak area in North Waziristan, on Saturday, March 1, 2025 according to sources. At least 10 people, including two civilians, were injured in the suicide attack apparently carried out by Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP) dominating large swathes of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

The vehicle used to attack the Army convoy was destroyed in the attack, according to Dawn.

(Incidentally, there was a major suicide attack on Friday also in which Maulana Hamilul Haq Haqqani was killed with many others while he was leading prayers in a mosque in Nowsha district. The Haqqania mosque is the alma mater where many of the Taliban now ruling Afghanistan have been educated and trained.)

The bodies of the Armymen who died in Saturday’s suicide attack and the injured were moved to a hospital as security forces launched a search operation in surrounding areas to track down the perpetrators. The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) did not issue any statement on Saturday’s incident. Instead, it released a statement saying that security forces had gunned down “six terrorists’’ during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Ghulam Khan village of North Waziristan.

Separately, an armed rebel was killed and a police official injured in an exchange of firing in Abbasa Khattak, Lakki Marwat, on Saturday. A police official said the gunfight ensued after a police patrol party came under attack in the trans-river belt area.

Armed rebels waging a war to drive out Pakistani security forces from their posts had ambushed the police van between Abbasa Khattak and Wanda Shahabakhel. The official said that District Police Officer Muhammad Jawad Ishaq dispatched reinforcement to the area to thwart the attack.

During the exchange of fire, police neutralised a militant while his accomplices escaped to the nearby mountains. A policeman injured in the attack was moved to a hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger, the official said. A heavy police contingent has launched a search in the mountainous terrain to arrest the attackers, he added.

KP Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised the policemen for exhibiting gallantry in fighting the terrorists and announced commendation certificates and cash prizes for them. The police have a very tenuous hold on many areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and have come under repeated attacks.

Some days ago, on February 24 (Monday), four security personnel were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Spinwam tehsil of North Waziristan.

On Sunday, an Islamabad police team narrowly missed a firecracker attack near Lal Masjid in the federal capital while on special duty. Around 11 members of the police team, including two lady constables, were deployed at Gali No 2, G-7/3 to ward off any untoward incident during a down-played stand-off between the clerics and students of Jamia Hafsa following the arrest of Ume Hassan, the wife of cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz.

Meanwhile, a video featuring former Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz went viral on social media in which he can be seen hurling threats at law enforcement personnel while brandishing automatic weapons. Taking note of the incident, the police said Maulana Aziz waved the weapon towards the police and threatened the officials.

When contacted, police officials expressed reluctance to comment on the episode. It was unclear whether the cleric was booked for threats or not.

Since the arrest of the cleric’s wife Ume Hassan, his companions and students have staged protests, demanding her release.
