Will US axe Canada from the Five Eyes Network: Trump administration ups the pressure

When Donald Trump first proposed that Canada should become the 51st American state, everyone thought he was joking. Turns out that he was dead serious. Now, the administration has upped the ante against Canada and the country is staring tough days ahead

If there is one thing that is very evident in the Donald Trump administration, it is the calling out pseudo liberals. Vice President J D Vance had described Britain as a truly Islamic nation to have nuclear weapons. This was in the context of Britain’s growing Muslim immigrant population.

Now the axe is set to fall on Canada and the US is likely to omit the country from the Five Eyes. Peter Navarro, who is a senior counsellor to the President for trade and manufacturing has now proposed that Canada be axed from the Five Eyes Intelligence Network. He dubbed Canada to be largely liberal and hence feels the country does not have a place in the Five Eyes Network.

Liberal Canada to get the boot

The latest statement from a top official in the Trump administration is a sign that the US is moving away from its English-speaking allies. The Trump administration has made it clear that all its allies should embrace the principles of MAGA when it comes to curtailing immigration.

Since Trump took over as President on January 20 2025, Canada has found itself in plenty of trouble. Following Trump’s victory in November, Trudeau had resigned as Prime Minister. This was largely owing to his ratings falling. He however continues to hold the post until his replacement is found.

Further Trump has mocked Trudeau on several occasions. During Trump’s first term, he had called Trudeau weak and a left leaning lunatic. In his second term he has repeatedly mocked Trudeau by referring to him as the Governor of Canada. He also has pitched the idea of making Canada the 51st US State.

While Navarro later denied that he had made such a statement, one thing is clear and that the US administration is resorting to pressure tactics when it comes to Canada. Even the suggestion that Trump had made regarding making Canada the 51st state started off as a joke. However that was not the case and everyone realised that Trump was in fact serious. Even Trudeau who steps down on March 9 was recently caught on open mic stating that Trump’s ambition was a real thing.

The suggestion to axe Canada from the Five Eyes Intelligence sharing network could well be a pressure tactic to begin talks on making Canada the 51 American state. Pressure is also mounting on Canada on the tariffs front and Trump seems to be dead serious about going about it.

A tough run for Canada

Trump began his term by targeting Canada. His first big tariff announcement was relating to Canada and Mexico. He has constantly pulled up the Trudeau government for not doing enough on immigration and people who enter the US and sell drugs.

On the Five Eyes front, there are discussions are on the same among officials in the Trump administration. Navarro is of the view that the US should increase pressure on Canada by evicting it from the Five Eyes.

The Five Years has been in force for several decades now and is considered to be the most important intelligence sharing network in the world. The question whether the Trump administration would go ahead the eviction is yet to be seen. Some feel that if there is a disruption it could work well in favour of China, Iran and North Korea.

However among the Five Eyes, it is Canada and New Zealand which provides the least intelligence in the group. The US would need to weigh in certain factors. Can an explosion of a nation from the network upset the rest of the partners.

While the officials and experts weigh in on options, the fact remains that with the Trump administration anything is possible. Some of the decisions he has taken nearly a month into his presidency has shaken many countries. As pointed out, everyone thought that Trump was joking when he spoke about annexing Canada. However now it has become extremely clear that he is dead serious about it.

Whether or not Canada remains part of the Five Eyes network is to be seen. However, one thing is clear and that Canada has tough days ahead and if it does not ally to the MAGA principles, they could expect one big showdown.
