Basant Panchami, also referred to as Vasant Panchami or Saraswati Panchami is being celebrated today. The auspicious time for performing the Vasant Panchami puja, known as the muhurat, is from 7:09 am to 12:35 pm. This lively festival marks the arrival of spring and honours Maa Saraswati, the Hindu Maa of wisdom, knowledge, music, and arts.

Vasant Panchami: Significance

Vasant Panchami holds great importance in Hindu culture as it marks the birth anniversary of Maa Saraswati, also known as Saraswati Jayanti. The festival is considered highly auspicious for beginning new endeavours, particularly in education. Devotees worship Maa Saraswati to seek her blessings for knowledge, creativity, and wisdom, believing that doing so helps remove ignorance and lethargy.

This day is especially significant for children, with rituals like Vidya Arambha (formal initiation into education) or Akshar-Abhyasam marking the beginning of their educational journey. Many schools and colleges organize Saraswati Puja ceremonies, seeking blessings for students and teachers.

Saraswati Puja Rituals

In addition to worshipping Goddess Saraswati, several other rituals are observed on Vasant Panchami:
Wearing yellow or white attire.
Offering yellow flowers to the deity.
Flying kites to celebrate the arrival of spring.
Performing Pitri Tarpan to honour deceased family members.
Beginning new ventures, especially those related to education.
