Karwar: In a shocking incident that has stirred public outcry, local police have made a significant breakthrough in the brutal case of a pregnant cow being slaughtered. The horrific act involved the accused cutting off the cow’s legs and head, then abandoning the calf inside its stomach while stealing only the meat.

The prime accused, identified as Mohammed  Faizil, was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly attempted to attack them and flee during his arrest. The incident unfolded near Kasaragod, with the accused now receiving treatment at the Honnavar government hospital. Earlier, police had apprehended 41-year-old Taufeeq from Valki, Honnavar, in connection with the case.

The brutal slaying of the pregnant cow occurred in Kondakuli village, Salkodu, where it was later uncovered that the perpetrators had supplied the meat to a wedding function. Authorities launched a comprehensive investigation following the state government’s serious attention to the matter, receiving directives from Home Minister and district police officials.

In a coordinated effort, police conducted extensive combing operations in the Honnavar forest, unearthing evidence related to the horrific crime. Investigators discovered that the meat from the slaughtered cow was indeed delivered to the wedding venue, with leads about the suspects surfacing from individuals involved in supplying the meat.

The accused reportedly hail from Bhatkal and Udupi, and the Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police (SP) provided insight into the gravity of cow protection efforts in the region, stating, “In the past five years, we have safeguarded 866 cows and arrested 425 individuals connected to calf theft cases. We have registered 43 cases focused on cow protection.”

On Friday, in connection with this case, the police apprehended three other suspects: Altaf Katapurusu, a driver from Apkhar Colony in Herangadi village; Mathin Katapurusu, a labourer from the same locality; and Mohammed Hussain Khurve, a cook from Khurva village in Herangadi. These individuals have also been charged with cattle theft and were subsequently presented in court.

BJP MLA Dinakara Shetty expressed outrage

In a scathing attack on the state government, BJP MLA Dinakar Shetty has expressed outrage over the gruesome cow slaughter case, where a pregnant cow’s stomach was cut open and the calf thrown away. The MLA, who visited the scene, has lashed out at Chief Minister and Home Minister for their lack of action.

Addressing the media, MLA Shetty said that   “Earlier, when the cow’s udder was cut, our Home Minister called him mentally ill. He is not mentally ill, our Chief Ministers and Home Ministers should get their heads checked. The CM and Home Minister should get their mental health checked in a hospital.”    “When such acts happen, we do not want compensation from you. I have told the cow owners not to accept any compensation offered by anyone.”    “There is no need for you to come here and give compensation. Do the work of protecting the cows in the state. We will all together give compensation to the cow owners.”   “It seems that thieves have no fear of the police. If there is fear of the police, such acts will not happen.”    “They complain that the police are providing information to the thieves and protecting them.”

Allegations of Police-Crime Nexus

The MLA also made serious allegations against the police, stating that some cases have come to his attention where thieves are committing crimes with the cooperation of the police.

“If a thief comes to the police station, he is not threatened. The police make friends with the thieves who come to the police station.”    “If any crime is committed in the future, both of them handle it as friends.”    “The police should also be alert and work. Those who have done wrong should be afraid of the police.”

MLA Dinakar Shetty’s allegations have sparked controversy and raised questions about the competence and integrity of the state government and the police force.

The harrowing case has not only highlighted the issue of animal cruelty but also underscored the determination of law enforcement to crack down on such crimes. As the investigation continues, local communities are urged to report any suspicious activities related to livestock safeguarding.

Police announced reward

The hunt for the remaining two suspects in the disturbing case of a pregnant cow slaughtered in Kondakuli village has intensified, following the arrest of two accused individuals earlier this week. The Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police, M. Narayan, has announced a reward of Rs. 50,000 for anyone who provides crucial information leading to the capture of the outstanding suspects.

The heinous crime involved the brutal slaughtering of a pregnant cow, a shocking act that has drawn outrage from local communities and animal rights activists alike. The main accused, identified as  Faizil  is reported to have sold the cow meat for Rs. 7,500. This sum was allegedly transferred to him via PhonePe, with plans to throw a party using the proceeds from the sale of the stolen meat.

Uttara Kannada district Superintendent of police M  Narayan expressed grave concerns regarding the brutality of the incident, stating to the media that preliminary investigations confirm that the meat from the slaughtered cow was used for a wedding celebration.

According to the police, the breakthrough in capturing the first two suspects came after a meticulous follow-up on a trail of blood left at the crime scene. The authorities indicated that the involvement of two community members played a crucial role in providing vital intelligence about the case. This cooperation has been pivotal as investigations unfold.

Initially, police detained five suspects for questioning. However, evidence indicated that the actual perpetrators did not belong to the same community, leading to further in-depth investigations. Superintendent Narayan clarified the importance of community engagement in tackling such criminal incidents and urged locals to aid in identifying the remaining culprits.

Ongoing  investigation

At present, six specialised teams are actively conducting operations to apprehend the remaining suspects. Despite the authorities’ efforts, several individuals, described as “black-masked villains,” remain at large. The police are utilizing a combination of forensic evidence and community support to increase their chances of capturing the full group involved in this atrocious act.

The investigation has not only triggered a sense of urgency among law enforcement but also rallied community members who are increasingly concerned about animal welfare and local security. With the police taking strong measures to ensure public safety and uphold the law, residents are increasingly encouraged to report any suspicious activity or information related to the ongoing investigation.
