Mahakumbh 2025: US soldier Michael embraces Sanatan Dharma after personal tragedy, now known as Baba Mokshpuri

The ongoing Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj has drawn spiritual luminaries and saints from across the globe, among whom stands Baba Mokshpuri, formerly known as Michael, an ex-US Army soldier who has embraced Sanatan Dharma. Hailing from New Mexico, Baba Mokshpuri’s journey from a soldier to a saint is nothing short of profound, symbolising the transformative power of spirituality.

Baba Mokshpuri’s path to spiritual awakening began in 2000 when he first visited Bharat with his family. His deep connection to the rich traditions of Sanatan Dharma was ignited during this trip, where he discovered meditation, yoga, and the essence of Bharat’s philosophy. Reflecting on that moment, he says, “That trip was a turning point. The richness of Bharat’s culture and traditions deeply moved me, sparking a spiritual awakening that I now recognise as my divine calling.”

However, it was the tragic loss of his son that propelled Baba Mokshpuri further into his spiritual quest. “The heartbreaking event taught me the impermanence of life. I found solace in meditation and yoga, which guided me through this difficult period,” he explains. This loss shifted his focus from worldly pursuits to a deeper search for meaning, leading him to dedicate his life to spiritual growth and the promotion of Sanatan Dharma.

A key influence in Baba Mokshpuri’s spiritual journey was his connection with Neem Karoli Baba, whom he credits as a cornerstone of his transformation. “The energy at Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram was transformative. It felt as though Baba embodied the spirit of Bhagwan Hanuman, deepening my devotion to meditation and yoga,” he shares. Inspired by these teachings, he joined the Juna Akhara and has since committed himself to attending every Mahakumbh, celebrating Bharat’s unparalleled spiritual heritage.

In 2016, Baba Mokshpuri’s first major participation in the Ujjain Kumbh marked a significant moment in his life, reaffirming his dedication to Bharat’s sacred traditions. He has vowed to attend every Mahakumbh thereafter as part of his mission to spread the wisdom of Sanatan Dharma to the world.

Now, Baba Mokshpuri’s plans extend beyond Bharat. He is in the process of establishing an ashram in New Mexico, where he aims to promote Bharat’s philosophy, yoga, and the universal values of Sanatan Dharma. “My mission is to share the transformative power of yoga, meditation, and Bharat’s spirituality with the world,” he says.
