Ayodhya, a city revered for its spiritual significance, is now making headlines for its remarkable economic transformation. The consecration of Ram Lalla at the grand Ram Mandir with over 13.77 crore visitors in 2024, has ignited a wave of growth that has reshaped the city’s economy, breathing new life into its streets and communities. What was once a tranquil pilgrimage destination reliant on fairs and religious gatherings has emerged as a bustling hub of economic activity, attracting millions of visitors and investment from across the globe.
Since the Bhoomi Pujan of the Ram Mandir in August 2020, Ayodhya’s development has gathered momentum. By December 2024, the city is expected to host over 16 crore visitors, surpassing even the Taj Mahal in tourist footfall. This unprecedented influx has turned Ayodhya into a thriving economic powerhouse, boosting its hospitality, retail, and service sectors.
Local entrepreneur Bhanu Pratap Singh aptly captured the sentiment: “The blessings of Ram ji have not only revived our faith but have also made people financially strong. This is a new Ayodhya, where prosperity is palpable.”
The surge in tourism has had a transformative effect on Ayodhya’s hospitality industry. According to Sharad Kapoor, President of the Faizabad Hotel Association (FHA), hotels have seen occupancy rates soar to 60-70 per cent, with 100 per cent occupancy on occasions like Ram Navami and Diwali. Recognizing the city’s potential, luxury hotel chains such as Marriott International, Taj Hotels, Sarovar Hotels, and Vivanta have established a presence in Ayodhya, signalling its emergence as a global destination of spiritual and economic importance.
Small vendors, the backbone of Ayodhya’s economy, have experienced an unprecedented boom. From selling pictures of Ram Lalla to offering puja materials and refreshments, businesses are thriving like never before.
A vendor near the temple, shared that, he earned over Rs 5 lakh in the past year by selling Ram Lalla pictures. The demand keeps growing, and I am now sourcing high-quality pictures from Delhi.
One who sells puja items, reported increased daily income from Rs 300-Rs 400 to Rs 2,500. Another Prasad seller, now earns Rs 1,500– Rs 2,000 daily, even during non-peak periods.
Street food vendors have also benefited from the growing crowd, offering traditional and trendy snacks like tandoori chai, sweet corn, and poha to pilgrims.
The economic boom extends beyond small businesses. Renowned global brands like Domino’s, Pizza Hut, Reliance Trends, and Udupi have set up outlets in Ayodhya. The service sector, bolstered by redevelopment plans worth Rs 85,000 crore, is at the forefront of this growth.
Economist Dr Srikant S Asthana while talking to media, “The redevelopment aims to handle a daily footfall of 3 lakh visitors, driving employment and boosting the district’s GDP. Ayodhya is no longer just a spiritual hub; it’s an economic engine.”
Ayodhya’s transformation has created thousands of jobs. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust directly employs over 1,000 people, providing benefits like Provident Fund and gratuity. Construction and tourism-related industries have further expanded employment opportunities, ensuring a brighter future for the city’s residents.
Prof. Vinod Srivastava, President of the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand Economic Association highlighted the economic potentail of Ayodhya and while speaking to Indian Express he stated that owing to the boom in the tourism sector, there will be a significant surge in jobs and it will help in growth of Uttar Pradesh’s GDP.
New markets have sprung up along key roads, offering a variety of souvenirs, Ramnami Gamchhas, and refreshments. The ripple effect of prosperity is evident in the lifestyle upgrades of residents, who are now purchasing vehicles, branded clothing, and luxury items.
Bhanu Pratap Singh summed up the transformation: “Ram ji ki kripa has made Ayodhya a city of prosperity. This is a new chapter, blending spiritual significance with economic dynamism.”
Ayodhya’s transformation is a testament to the power of faith as a driver of progress. The Ram Mandir, a symbol of devotion, has also become an emblem of economic resurgence.
