NEW DELHI: In a significant step towards reforming higher education in India, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is set to introduce draft regulations that promise greater flexibility and inclusivity in the recruitment of faculty members and academic staff at universities and colleges. Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of the UGC, shared insights about the upcoming changes during a recent interaction. He revealed that the Commission is revising the 2018 regulations on minimum qualifications for the appointment of teachers in universities and colleges. He said that “UGC is currently in the process of revising the current regulations to offer universities and colleges wider opportunities for hiring skilled faculty. The aim is to give institutions the flexibility to recruit individuals with multidisciplinary expertise while upholding academic standards”.

The updated draft regulations, expected to be released soon for public feedback, underscore the UGC’s commitment to fostering a dynamic, diverse, and globally competitive academic environment in India.
