Mahakumbh 2025: First-ever deployment of tethered drones ensures unmatched security for devotees

For the first time in Mahakumbh 2025, tethered drones equipped with advanced technology have been deployed to provide real-time aerial surveillance, ensuring the safety of 45 crore devotees. For the first time in the history of Mahakumbh, tethered drones equipped with advanced technology have been deployed to enhance the safety and security of millions of devotees. These high-tech devices, capable of capturing high-resolution images, videos, and sensor data, provide a comprehensive aerial view of the expansive Mahakumbh Nagar, leaving no detail overlooked.

The initiative follows directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who emphasised the need for state-of-the-art security infrastructure to make this year’s Mahakumbh a safe and unforgettable event.

SSP Rajesh Dwivedi, leading the security arrangements, stated that an expert team has been appointed to monitor the operation of the tethered drones. These drones, secured with ropes and stationed on high towers, offer continuous surveillance without requiring frequent adjustments. Their strategic placement enables them to monitor critical areas such as the Sangam banks, crowded ghats, temples, and other significant locations.

“The tethered drones serve as the third eye for the Mahakumbh Nagar police, instantly alerting us to any developments or security concerns,” said Dwivedi. “Their ability to transmit secure real-time data ensures that officers can respond swiftly to overcrowding or suspicious activities.”

The drones are complemented by an extensive network of over 2,750 CCTV cameras, more than half of which are equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities. This integrated system allows for proactive monitoring and efficient crowd management.

Mahakumbh Nagar is set to welcome an estimated 45 crore devotees this year, making security a top priority. Dwivedi affirmed that the measures align with CM Yogi Adityanath’s vision of creating a safe and seamless experience for all attendees.

“CM Yogi Adityanath’s vision is to create a hi-tech security system that leaves no room for oversight,” Dwivedi stated. “The combination of tethered drones and AI-powered cameras provides an unmatched level of preparedness and vigilance.”

The drones’ ability to transmit secure data ensures that critical information remains protected while enabling the identification of areas requiring immediate attention. This technology-driven approach underscores a commitment to the safety and well-being of devotees attending one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Positioned as a cornerstone of the security infrastructure, the tethered drones are a testament to the integration of advanced technology in managing large-scale events. Their deployment marks a significant milestone in ensuring the safety of devotees at one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
