Chola-era inscription found near Perumal temple in Salem

In a significant archaeological development, a 725-year-old inscription from the Chola period has been found near the Perumal Temple in Salem, Tamil Nadu. The inscription, which is believed to have been engraved during the reign of the Third Kulothunga Chola (1190 AD), is expected to provide valuable insights into the Chola dynasty’s influence in the region.

The discovery of the inscription was incidental to an investigation prompted by a complaint about missing murtis of Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Amshai from the Perumal Temple, located in the Nethimedu area. The temple, which holds both religious and historical significance, has long been a site of interest for scholars and locals alike.

Following the complaint, officials from the Tiruthondar Sabha, along with personnel from the Revenue and Archaeological Departments, and local police, began a thorough investigation. While examining the area near the temple, the inscription was unearthed, much to the astonishment of those involved in the case.

Significance of the Inscription

The Chola dynasty, one of the most powerful and influential empires in South India, left behind numerous inscriptions that document their reign, religious contributions, and governance. The Third Kulothunga Chola, who ruled in the late 12th century, is known for his administrative skills and efforts to strengthen the Chola Empire’s influence in the southern regions.

The inscription found near the Perumal Temple is expected to reveal more about the Chola administration’s presence in the region during Kulothunga Chola’s rule.

Investigation into Missing Murtis

Alongside the discovery of the inscription, local authorities are also continuing their investigation into the missing murtis from the temple. The murtis of Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Amshai, which are believed to be of significant cultural and religious importance, were reported missing recently, raising concerns among the local community.

Renewed Interest in Chola Heritage

This discovery has brought renewed attention to the Chola heritage in Tamil Nadu. In recent years, efforts have been underway to preserve and document Chola-era monuments and inscriptions, many of which have been found in Tamil Nadu’s rural areas.

Inscriptions like the one found in Salem not only enrich the understanding of the Chola period but also contribute to preserving the cultural and historical identity of the region. Scholars and historians are expected to study the inscription in detail to uncover more information about the governance, religious practices, and cultural dynamics of the Chola dynasty.
