Cases of love jihad, where Muslim men allegedly ensnare Hindu women in false romantic relationships for conversion and marriage, have surged in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, recently. In just the past week, three alarming incidents have come to light: one involving a Muslim youth coercing a Hindu woman to convert to Islam, another concerning the abduction of a girl by Islamist individuals, and a third where a furniture maker threatened a Hindu woman with conversion and marriage. Below are the details of these incidents.

In Haldwani’s Mukhani police station area, a young man from the Muslim community is accused of harassing a Hindu woman and pressuring her for marriage and conversion. This case has led to significant outrage among the Hindu community.

On October 9, these groups approached the Lamachaur police post demanding strict action against the accused. The allegations are that the accused, who runs a furniture shop, has been pressuring the Hindu woman for marriage and religious conversion. It’s reported that the woman’s marriage was already arranged, but the accused was insisting on marrying her himself.

Additionally, here are three recent cases of crimes against women in Uttarakhand:

Tharali, Chamoli District: A Muslim youth who worked at a salon befriended a minor Hindu girl on Instagram, raped her, and later circulated the video. The police arrested the youth, leading to widespread anger among Hindu organisations and the community. Protests followed, with organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal holding a significant rally.

Pithoragarh Case: A 14-year-old girl was abducted by a 21-year-old man from Muzaffarnagar. After extensive search operations, the police managed to recover the girl and arrested the accused under relevant sections for kidnapping.

Haldwani Case: Yaseen, a furniture shop owner in Lamachaur, Haldwani, was accused of threatening and pressuring a Hindu woman for marriage and conversion. Despite her refusal and her engagement to another man, he continued to harass her through messages and calls. Hindu organisations intervened, leading to his arrest after a public confrontation.

These incidents have stirred considerable social unrest and highlight the issues of harassment, coercion, and religious conversion pressures in Uttarakhand.
