The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is preparing to launch Phase I of the much-anticipated Metro 3 corridor, which will connect Aarey to the bustling Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), in the first week of October. This major transit development marks a significant milestone for Mumbai, as it will inaugurate the city’s first fully underground metro line, commonly known as the ‘Aqua Line.’
Stretching 33.5 kilometers, the Metro 3 line will link Cuffe Parade, Mumbai’s southernmost business district, to SEEPZ in the north-central area, passing through Colaba, Bandra, and the Special Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ). The corridor boasts 26 underground stations and one at-grade station, cementing its importance as a key infrastructure project for the city’s growing metro network. As the only metro line connecting the southern tip of Mumbai, it will serve as a crucial artery for the city’s daily commuters.
According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to preside over the inauguration of the 12-kilometer stretch of Metro 3, which includes 10 stations from Aarey to BKC. The event is slated to take place between October 3 and October 5, with October 4 being the most likely date, as per sources from *The Economic Times*. Following the inaugural ceremony, the metro will be opened to the public the next day, according to a senior MMRCL official. “We are fully prepared for the inaugural run,” the official confirmed, signaling the completion of extensive preparations for the metro’s launch.
The first phase of the Metro 3 corridor will cater to high-traffic zones, connecting the city’s western suburbs and offering seamless access between BKC and other critical areas. Transport experts are optimistic about the significant impact the new 12-kilometer stretch will have on Mumbai’s commuting patterns, despite its relatively short length.
“The BKC-Aarey stretch, with its 10 stations, covers some of the most congested areas in the city,” explained a transport expert. “Commuters from BKC will be able to reach Santacruz Metro station and easily walk to the suburban railway. Similarly, passengers can travel to Marol and connect to Ghatkopar via the Central Railway. Additionally, Metro 3 provides direct access to both the domestic and international airports, making it a game-changer for air travellers.”
Initially scheduled for completion in 2021, the Metro 3 project faced several delays due to a combination of legal and logistical hurdles. The controversy surrounding tree-cutting permissions at the Aarey car depot, which became a flashpoint for environmental activists, significantly slowed down the project. Moreover, delays in construction caused by a slow-performing contractor led to repeated revisions of the project’s timeline. After multiple deadline extensions, the MMRCL has now set June 2024 as the final completion date for the entire corridor, with Phase I being ready ahead of schedule.
Once the entire Metro 3 line becomes operational, it will provide a vital link between southern, central, and western Mumbai, drastically improving the city’s transit infrastructure and reducing commuting times. The underground nature of the line is also expected to alleviate surface traffic congestion, providing a faster and more reliable transport option for Mumbai’s ever-growing population.
In addition to the Metro 3 launch, Prime Minister Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for another major metro project—the Thane Ring Metro. Recently approved by the Union Cabinet, the 29-kilometer Thane Ring Metro will feature 22 stations and is projected to be operational by 2029. This elevated route aims to improve connectivity between Mumbai, Kalyan, and Thane, easing the strain on existing roadways and reducing commuting times for millions of daily passengers.
