Eczema, a common skin condition marked by redness, inflammation, and itching, has affected millions globally, often prompting individuals to seek conventional treatment. Rooted in centuries of knowledge, Ayurveda focuses on addressing the underlying causes of eczema by balancing the body’s doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and improving overall skin health.

Eczema, known as “Vicharchika” in Ayurveda, is caused primarily by an imbalance of the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism in the body. When the Pitta dosha is out of balance, it can result in skin conditions characterized by excess heat, such as eczema. Factors like poor diet, stress, pollution, and improper lifestyle habits can worsen this imbalance, leading to chronic inflammation.

Ayurvedic Approach to Healing Eczema

Ayurvedic treatment for eczema aims to restore harmony within the body, reduce inflammation, and nourish the skin. The approach includes detoxification, herbal remedies, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes to target both the symptoms and root cause of the condition.

1. Detoxification (Panchakarma)

Detoxification is a key aspect of Ayurvedic treatment for eczema. Panchakarma, a series of therapeutic procedures, helps eliminate toxins (Ama) from the body that may contribute to inflammation. Therapies such as Abhyanga (herbal oil massage), Virechana (therapeutic purgation), and Shirodhara (medicated oil pouring) are common practices used to cleanse the system.

2. Herbal Remedies

Herbs play a crucial role in Ayurvedic eczema treatment. Some commonly prescribed herbs include:

  • Neem (Azadirachta indica): Known for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, neem helps soothe eczema-prone skin.
  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties help in reducing redness and irritation.
  • Khadira (Acacia catechu): Effective in skin detoxification and improving skin texture.
  • Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia): A blood purifier, it helps detoxify the system and reduces skin inflammation.

3. Dietary Recommendations

Diet is a central component in managing eczema according to Ayurveda. A Pitta-pacifying diet is advised, which includes cooling, soothing, and non-spicy foods. Leafy greens, whole grains, and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids are recommended, while spicy, oily, and acidic foods should be avoided. Hydration is equally important to keep the skin moisturized and healthy from within.

4. Lifestyle Modifications

Ayurveda emphasises maintaining a balanced lifestyle to prevent flare-ups. Daily routines like proper sleep, stress management, and regular exercise can help keep eczema under control. Practices such as yoga and meditation are encouraged to reduce stress, a common eczema trigger.
