Guwahati: Ali Hussain, a tout from Hajirhat village, was taken into custody by Assam police in the South Salmara Mankachar area as part of a significant operation against illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. Hussain is charged with arranging, for financial benefit, the unauthorised entry of citizens of Bangladesh into Assam. District police conducted a detailed investigation that led them to specific inputs that Hussain had facilitated the illegal transit of intruders through the char regions, a maze-like network of river islands that is well-known for cross-border movement. As a result, Hussain was arrested. Authorities claim Hussain helped the intruders on their unauthorised entry into Indian territory by giving them refuge and advice.
While in police detention, Ali Hussain is being questioned to determine the complete scope of his network and locate any other collaborators in the operation. This event follows another notable arrest made by Dhubri police on August 19 night near Dhubri town. The woman, Lipi Akhtar, was taken into custody. Akhtar acknowledged under questioning that she had entered Assam illegally with Hussain’s help and had paid him 2,500 Bangladeshi Taka for his assistance. She admitted to being a member of a bigger gang involved in this illegal movement and confessed to travelling to Assam the day before her detention.
Meanwhile, according to authorities, raids in three locations in Tripura on August 18 resulted in the arrest of fourteen intruders Bangladesh and five facilitators from India. Based on a tip, Tripura Police nabbed over seven transgender Bangladeshi nationals on Sunday night in the late hours at Sidhai Police Station, which is part of West District.
“We have learned that two Indian touts assisted eight intruders of Bangladesh in crossing the border. We have apprehended eight infiltrators from Bangladesh and four Indians who assisted them in entering Tripura with the assistance of the locals. “They have not produced any legal documentation,” a Tripura Police officer stated.
Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Ananta Das said in a statement that police carried out a raid and detained eight Bangladeshi citizens on Sunday after acting on specific information about their presence at Lamprapara in the Gumati district. Seven citizens of Bangladesh and five intermediaries from India were taken into custody on Saturday night in the West Tripura district’s Sidhai neighbourhood.
Three citizens of Bangladesh were arrested on Monday in a different operation from the vicinity of the MBB Airport in West Tripura. Das stated that in light of the recent political upheavals in Bangladesh, the arrests were a part of a heightened border watch intended to thwart any efforts at infiltration. “Enhanced border surveillance has made it possible to apprehend eighteen intruders from Bangladesh. In cooperation with BSF officers, we shall keep patrolling,” he said.
