Just one day after two Indian touts and six Bangladeshi nationals were detained at the Agartala railway station on their way to Kolkata and Chennai, twelve more foreign intruders—three of whom were women—were apprehended in West Tripura district on August 4 for breaking into Indian territory without authorisation.

The 12 Bangladeshi intruders were detained close to the international border in the Lankamura and Shanmura neighbourhoods on the fringes of the state capital, according to S K Bardhan, inspector of the West Agartala police station. “We are asking the detainees questions. A case has been scheduled under the Passport and Foreigners Acts. He informed reporters. The arrested Bangladeshi intruders were produced before a local court, and they were sent to police custody by the court for further investigation.

At the Agartala railway station, the Chandrapur Inter-State Bus Terminus, the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, and other locations in Tripura, the Government Railway Police, the Border Security Force, the police, and other authorities have taken over 200 Bangladeshi nationals and 32 Rohingya individuals into custody in last couple of months. In response to the increasing number of foreign nationals infiltrating the country, Chief Minister Manik Saha met in July with senior BSF personnel. At the commander and border outpost levels, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF have been having a number of talks.

Earlier eight Bangladeshi citizens and two Indian touts were taken into custody on August 1, 2024, at the Agartala Railway Station. Through the assistance of touts from Bangladesh, the nationals of Bangladesh entered India illegally. The Tripura police have filed a specific case against the arrested illegal intruders.

Earlier on July 27, at the Agartala railway station, as many as 23 illegal Bangladeshi intruders were arrested by police. According to police sources, the arrests were made based on a tip-off. “All 23 individuals are residents of Chapai Nawabganj, Bangladesh, aged between 18 and 30 years,” confirmed a spokesperson for the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF). They were trying to take the Humsafar Express train to southern India.
