In a troubling incident, three Muslim children were suspended from Springwell School on August 2, after they attempted to forcefully convert a Hindu classmate to Islam. The incident has sparked concerns among parents and the school community regarding religious tolerance and the influence of peer pressure on young children.

The Muslim students allegedly coerced the Hindu child into agreeing to change his name to Mohammed and pressured him to cut off his kalawa using scissors. They further advised him that eating meat, specifically halal meat, would make him stronger, despite knowing that he was a vegetarian.

The incident came to light when the parents of the Hindu child noticed significant changes in his behaviour upon returning home from school. Upon probing, they discovered that their son’s Muslim classmates were encouraging him to convert to Islam and had threatened to sever their friendship if he did not comply.

Concerned about their child’s well-being, the parents approached the class teacher. However, the teacher allegedly downplayed the incident, suggesting it might be part of the children’s exploration. Dissatisfied with this response, the parents continued to question the activities of the Muslim students. “I love any religion. It’s not the problem. But what I am worried about is those kids who have been taught like this by their parents or someone,” they expressed, voicing their concerns over the motivations behind the attempted conversion.

The situation escalated when the Hindu boy informed his mother that he wanted to change his name to Muhammad. “I was at work and in the afternoon I got a phone call from my son’s mummy and she said to me that our son wants to change his name to Muhammad. I am like where is this coming from and I was really shocked actually to hear that. We never talk about any other religion at home, not even our own religion. We just keep it to us adults, especially with kids,” recounted the boy’s father.

Following this revelation, the family approached the school administration to report the incident. The school conducted an investigation and confirmed that the Muslim students had indeed threatened to end their friendship with the Hindu boy if he did not convert. As a result, the school administration decided to suspend the involved students.

“In this day and age, we all have freedom of expression but then you know people they use the kids, I mean, if that is the case in this scenario then it’s really sad,” the Indian father added, highlighting the broader implications of such incidents.

The parents shared email correspondence with Ealing Nub News, revealing communication between themselves and Springwell’s Headteacher, Kamaljeet Grewal. Grewal acknowledged the seriousness of the problem and assured the parents that the school is actively working to create a safe and inclusive environment. She emphasised that the school has procedures in place to prevent grooming, indoctrination, and any form of religious or ideological pressure.

Concerned about the potential for similar incidents affecting other students, the family has also informed other families and neighbours. They hope to raise awareness and ensure that such occurrences are addressed promptly and effectively in all schools.
