Media reports suggest that Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL), owned by the Government of Bharat, is gearing up to produce and export Sukhoi SU-30 fighter jets. It is a significant development in Bharat’s defence production capabilities. The endeavour enjoys Russian support. The collaboration highlights the agreement for cooperation in manufacturing and technology transfer, promoting Bharat’s skill export capacities.

Discussions between HAL and Defence departments are in the process of stepping into an era of international defence trade. The product selected for the trade is the Sukhoi Su-30 Fighter Plane. Once it is materialised, it will be a great leap forward for Bharat’s flourishing defence manufacture.

According to reports, HAL is in discussion to build fighter aircraft in Nasik. Russians agreed to support the manufacture of these fighter planes. It is to be noted that Russia is the actual manufacturer of Sukhoi jets. The collaboration promotes the strategic partnership between Bharat and Russia. This joint venture comes on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia and his discussion with Vladimir Putin.

Both Bharat and Russia have agreed to launch joint ventures to maintain and produce fighters of Russian origin under the Make-in-India scheme. The initiative’s primary target is to meet the needs of our Armed Forces and subsequently step into exports to third-world countries that are friendly to us. It will be the remarkable launch of our country’s defence exports.

Nasik division of HAL has already proved that it is capable of overhauling the Sukhoi-30MKl fighters. HAL has already overhauled 100 Sukhoi fighters for our Air Force. Recently, the country’s Defence Secretary handed over the 100th one to the IAF. This underscores HAL’s capability in Repair and Overhaul (ROH) talents. Nasik Division of HAL has achieved the overhaul capacity of 20 Sukhoi-30MKl fighters per annum. Nasik’s achievement is despite the hurdles in the supply due to complex international political developments.

The ROH facility in Nasik is the first in the world. It is supported by several sources, including the IAF, Regulatory Bodies, and private industries, which has made it a key player in the aerospace sector.

HAL is expected to take up a Rs 60,000 crore upgrade of the Sukhoi-30MKl fighter fleet. This venture will get the support of DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). It will boost the fighters’ capabilities with new radars, mission control systems, electronic warfare capabilities and integration of advanced weapon systems.

HAL’s CMD, CB Ananthakrishnan, discussed the significant involvement of the private sector in the project. The project is divided into two phases. The first phase focuses on installing new avionics and radars, and the second on flight control systems. Indigenous systems will replace various Russian-origin components. It is a forward march towards self-reliance in defence production.

The venture is all set to expand its reach. More than 600 Su-27/30 type fighters are manufactured globally. HAL’s endeavour to export these upgraded aircraft can provide remarkable market prospects. Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Algeria appear to be prospective clients.

These developments will undoubtedly lead the country to the position of world leader in the field of fighter aircraft in the years to come.
