NEW DELHI: The 2024 UK General Election will be remembered for its historic outcomes. Rishi Sunak’s tenure as the first prime minister of Indian heritage has ended which has disappointed the South Asians living in the UK, but a north Bihar town is celebrating the success of a son of the soil.
Kanishka Narayan Wales, who spent 12 years of his life in Muzaffarpur, has become an MP by winning as a Labour Party candidate from the UK. He won from Vale of Glamorgan, Wales as a Labour candidate against Conservative party member Alun Cairns.
At one end there is sadness after the defeat of Rishi Sunak, but on the other end there is celebration both in India and Britain for Kanishka Narayan. The Labour Party’s remarkable victory stands out, ending the Conservative Party’s 14-year reign.
The Conservative party’s general election capitulation ends a short lived but historic period for the country, which for the first time was led by a person of colour, and a Hindu.
Following his victory and becoming an MP, celebrations erupted at Kanishka’s residence in Muzaffarpur.
Kanishka is originally from Sondho village of Goraul police station area of Vaishali. His grandfather late Krishna Kumar and Veena Devi had settled in Damuchak of Muzaffarpur many years ago. His grandfather, Krishna Kumar, was a notable figure in the community, serving as the chairman of the Muzaffarpur District Board and founding the SKJ Law College. Narayan’s parents, Santosh Kumar and Chetna Sinha, moved to Delhi after graduating from SKJ Law College, seeking broader opportunities. Kanishka studied in Muzaffarpur till class three.
After this, Kanishka did his further studies from Delhi and later he went to Britain with his parents.
Kanishka, who is from a minority background of Asian origin living in Britain, received higher education from Etten, Oxford and Stanford America with a scholarship. He also worked as a public servant with the then British Prime Minister David Cameron in the environment department.
Before entering into the political arena, Kanishka Narayan built a respectable career in the British civil service. This professional experience provided him with a profound understanding of governance and public administration, equipping him with the skills required for a successful political career.
When the 2024 UK General Election was announced, Kanishka made a big decision to resign from his civil service position, dedicating himself entirely to his campaign. His determination and passion for politics were evident and the result is infront of everyone. Narayan’s election to the UK Parliament marks a significant milestone for Indian representation in British politics. It signifies the growing influence and integration of the Indian diaspora within the UK’s political landscape. This achievement not only honours Kanishka’s individual efforts but also highlights the contributions of the broader Indian community.
