In a recent turn of events, Madurai CPM MP Su Venkatesan and Congress MP Venugopal have come under fire for making derogatory remarks against Hindus and the revered Sengol symbol. During a session intended for expressing gratitude to the President, these MPs deviated from the agenda and seized the opportunity to launch scathing attacks on the Hindu community, raising concerns about their motives and intentions.

The speeches delivered by the I.N.D.I.Alliance MPs, predominantly led by Congress, were characterized by a deliberate effort to disrupt the session and potentially incite a civil war against the government. It is apparent that their frustration at being unable to occupy the treasury benches fueled their actions, leading them to target the Hindu community with calculated precision.

Madurai CPM MP Su Venkatesan, known for his controversial remarks, took aim at the Sengol (sceptre), a symbol deeply intertwined with Tamil culture. As the State Secretary of the CPM, Venkatesan brazenly mocked the Sengol, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi ceremoniously installed in the new parliament building on May 28, 2023, as a symbol representing righteousness and justice. It is worth noting that Venkatesan is an acclaimed writer and recipient of the Sahitya Academy award for his book. However, some critics argue that his award may have been influenced by left-leaning institutions, casting doubt on the true significance of his disparaging comments about the Sengol.

Venkatesan further drew attention to the absence of any mention of Ayodhya in the President’s speech, contrasting it with the previous session of the 17th Lok Sabha where the Prime Minister extensively addressed the Ayodhya issue. In a provocative statement, Venkatesan insinuated that unless the ruling party receives their vote, Ayodhya and even God would be abandoned.

He then focussed speech on ‘Sengol,’ a royal sceptre symbolizing righteousness, justice, and authority in Indian culture. He ridiculed its narrative by comparing it unfavourably with historical kings known for polygamy and opulent lifestyles in their women’s quarters. He questioned the symbolism of bringing the Sengol into parliamentary proceedings, asking rhetorically about the historical oppression of women by kings who wielded it. He asked “Do you know how many hundreds of women were kept as slaves by each king who held this sengol? What are trying to say to the women of the country by bringing and keeping the sengol here? It is painful.”

He also made unsubstantiated claims about BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha disparaging Tamil people.

He earlier mocked when the first night of Godess meenaksi will happen after the famous celestial marriage of Goddess with Sundraswarar. It is an annual festival drawing lakhs of devotees from the country.  He has made a lot of rabid hindu phobic, anti-BJP, RSS rants in the past still the voters of Madurai re-elected him with good margin.

In another one, neighbouring Kerala based politician and Congress MP KC Venugopal made some Anti Hindu comments in Parliament. They forget that they were elected to discuss people’s problems not to mock the religion of majority in one voice.

Congress MP KC Venugopal from Alappuzha spoke on July 2, 2024 about the revered Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita, accusing it of promoting violence, murder, and intolerance.  He made this speech to support his LoP and MP Rahul Gandhi’s earlier comment alleging that those identifying as Hindus are involved in violence and hatred, sparking significant protests and criticism from various quarters.

Venugopal also questioned the President’s assertion of the government’s clear majority, stating, “Why is the President insisting that the government has a clear majority? We are certain that this government’s insecurity is evident in the President’s address.”

He reasoned out the BJP’s victory due the misuse of investigative agencies like the ED, CBI, and IT, as well as biased media coverage funded by corporate entities.  He criticized BJP narratives and accused them of using Hinduism for electoral polarization, challenging their commitment to Hindu beliefs.

Venugopal raised the issue of defining “who is a real Hindu,” stating that it should be someone who comprehends the principles of dialogue, tolerance, and human values. He said “Mahatma Gandhi and Godse believe in the Bhagavad Gita, both believed in Bhagavad Gita, both read Bhagavad Gita, but Gandhi learnt non-violence, tolerance and respect for human life from the Gita and the message of Lord Krishna. Godse learnt violence, murder and intolerance from the same textbook. We believe in Gandhi’s Hinduism not Godse’s Hinduism.”

It has become clear if we view the debates in Parliament that has been witnessing a record low of I.N.D.I.Alliance members. Going away from the well settled convention, DMK MPs hailed Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, after taking oath in the Lok Sabha. Some MPs even called Udhayanidhi their “future”, inviting strong criticism from the BJP. it shows their power hungry not to serve people who voted for him.
