Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting nearly 2 lakh people, including 36,000 children, across nine districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports significant impacts, with thousands displaced and substantial damage to property and agriculture.
One female and one elderly person died in the Lala Revenue Circle area in Hailakandi district after drowning in flood waters. Another minor drowned in the district on May 31, and two others were rescued by the SDRF team. One youth drowned in Nalbari district,, taking the total casualty to 4.
Over 1.02 lakh people were affected in Cachar district in the first spat of floods caused by incessant rain after cyclone Remal hit the state. Nearly 37,000 people were affected in Karimganj district. In Hailakandi district, 14,308 people were affected by the floods. In Nagaon district, 22,354 people were affected, and in Hojai district, 22,058 people were affected by the current floods.
386 villages under 22 revenue circles in Nagaon, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao districts have been submerged. Flood waters have engulfed 3,238.8 hectares of crop area, causing significant agricultural damage.
The administration has established 110 relief camps and distribution centres in the nine flood-hit districts. Approximately 35,640 people have taken shelter in these camps. Over 2.34 lakh domestic animals have been affected by the floods.
Flood waters have damaged 13 roads and breached one embankment in Karimganj district. The Kopili River at Kampur in Nagaon district is flowing above the danger level, exacerbating the flooding.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) is coordinating with local authorities to provide relief and conduct rescue operations. Efforts are ongoing to repair damaged infrastructure and support affected communities. The flood situation in Assam remains dire, with extensive efforts needed to support the nearly 2 lakh affected individuals.
