Controversy erupted in the Punjabi Market of Kosikalan, Mathura, after Wahid Qureshi, a local shopkeeper, attempted to rename the entire market as ‘Islamic Bazar.’ The situation intensified when Qureshi distributed shopping bags bearing the new name, leading to widespread anger among traders and residents.

Wahid Qureshi, who runs a readymade garment shop named Trade Never Ends, printed and distributed carry bags with the name ‘Islamic Bazar’ to promote his business. This unilateral renaming of the historically known Punjabi Market sparked immediate outrage. Local traders quickly informed the outpost police about Qureshi’s actions, but no prompt action was taken.

The incident took a turn when it gained momentum on social media, prompting the Mathura Police to intervene. They conducted a raid on Qureshi’s shop, apprehending both him and his servant. While the servant was released, Qureshi faced charges of breaching public peace.

The police presented Qureshi before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Chhata, who ordered his detention. Simultaneously, TS Anirudh Singh from the Revenue Section of the Municipal Council confiscated 25 kilograms of the offending carry bags from Qureshi’s shop. Police Station Ajit Singh confirmed that the shopkeeper has been sent to jail pending further legal action.

Municipal Council’s Executive Officer Nihal Singh emphasised that the authority to rename any street, locality, or market lies solely with the Municipal Council. He stated that Qureshi’s actions had significantly disturbed the communal harmony of the area. Consequently, the Municipal Council issued a formal notice to Qureshi, demanding an explanation within three days. Failure to comply could result in further punitive measures.

The authorities are keen on ensuring no unilateral actions disturb the established societal balance.
