Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar, who was allegedly murdered in Kolkata was skinned and his bones were broken into pieces before being disposed of across the city, sources affiliated with the West Bengal Crime Investigation Department told an Indian news agency.  The grisly details of the MP’s murder emerged on May 24, 2024, after the CID team arrested one suspect in connection with the incident.

CID sources say that the suspect, Jihad Hawladar, a professional butcher was a resident of Barakpur village in Bangladesh’s Khulna District and was staying in Mumbai illegally. Hawladar was hired by the Awami League MP’s friend Aktharuzzaman, a US citizen in whose rented accommodation he was murdered. He arrived in Kolkata around two months ago, CID sources claimed.

Hawladar who was staying at a hotel close to the airport (Kolkata International Airport) was given a share of five crore that Akhtaruzzaman spent on killing the Bangladeshi MP, sources said. During the interrogation, Hawladar confessed that he and four other Bangladeshi nationals smothered and killed the MP at a flat in Kolkata’s New Town area. He claimed that the murder was carried out on the orders of Akhtaruzzaman.

They then skinned the body of the MP in the flat and then minced the flesh to destroy the identity of Anwar, CIS sources said. They then broke his bones into pieces and packed them in different plastic packets. The killers then travelled to different places in Kolkata using various modes of transport and disposed the remains and packets. The Bangladeshi MP was last seen entering the flat in New Town Police said the flat was rented out to the MP’s friend by an excise department employee.

Bangladeshi Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan said the MP who was missing from Kolkata since May 13 was murdered and three people were arrested. His body is yet to be recovered.

The three-time Bangladeshi MP had reportedly arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment. He initially stayed at the residence of his family friend Gopal Biswas, a resident of Baranagar in north Kolkata. The next day, on May 13, 2024, Anwarul Azim Anar left Biswas’s home to visit a doctor. However, the MP has been incommunicado since May 17, prompting Biswas to file a missing complaint later.
