Security forces in an operation launched in the wee hours of May 18 have gunned down a Maoist in the insurgency-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. According to the reports, the combing operation was launched following the inputs with egards to the presence of the Maoists in the area.

The encounter between the forces and the Maoists occurred near the forest of Tolnai, after which the body of a male Maoist was recovered. The identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained, while an extensive search operation is being carried out in the vicinity of the encounter site.

The operation was launched by the personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) a specialised counter-insurgency unit of the Chhattisgarh police, under the Konta police station limits of Sukma.

The development occurred on the heels of Maoist outfits pasting posters against DRG personnel in the Uspari area under the Bhairamgarh block of neighbouring Bijapur district on Friday, May 17.

According to the reports, the outlaws have released a hit-list of DRG personnel and alleged them of assaulting the villagers. Further, the Maoist outfit has also appealed to the labourers who indulged in the construction of a culvert to return home.

It is being speculated that the recent success of the security forces against the outlaws has frustrated the latter in such a way that they have now released a list of the DRG personnel who they consider instrumental in the successful targeted operations.

It must be noted that the DRG unit of the Chhattisgarh police is composed of local personnel who are more familiar about the geographical aspects of the region and possible hideouts of the extremists, additionally, these personnel are also well trained in guerilla warfare, a tactic preferred by the outlaws while fighting with the security forces.

Maoists linked to murder of BJP leader nabbed in Bijapur

In other news, a joint team of security personnel on Friday nabbed as many as three active cadres of the outlawed CPI Maoist linked to the murder of a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tirupati Katla who was stabbed to death in March this year.

According to the reports, the arrested Maoist were allegedly involved in the killing of the BJP worker and ‘Janpad Sadasya’, Katla, who was attacked by the members of Small Action Team (SAT) of the outlawed CPI Maoist on March 1 this year.

Those arrested have been identified as Raju Mudma, Munna Mudma and Lakhmu Mudma, all active members of the banned outfit who were nabbed from Chintanpalli village under the Toynar police station limits on May 17.

Katla, a resident of Bijapur, was stabbed multiple times with knives and other sharp edged weapons just around 700 metres from the Toynar police station. A gravely injured Katla was soon rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

It was then reported that the deceased leader had been on the hit-list of the Maoists for quite some time, and the extremists were in search of an appropriate opportunity to target him.
