Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came down heavily on all those who expressed grief over the passing away of gangster Mukhtar Ansari. He died on March 28 in Banda jail. On being asked in a televised interview about the death of Ansari, Yogi Adityanath minced no words and said that anyway, he had die.
Responding to questions about the allegations of Ansari being allegdly poisoned to death, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister said, “Marna toh tha hi (He had to anyway die) … You tell me, how long will the person who killed hundreds of people escape?”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a decisive stand against opposition parties, particularly targeting the Congress and Samajwadi Party, over their response to the recent death of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari. Adityanath accused them of attempting to shield Ansari, with the Congress receiving particular scrutiny for their efforts to safeguard him.
Yogi Adityanath drew comparisons between the reactions of the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and BJP to Ansari’s death and that of former state chief minister Kalyan Singh, emphasising what he perceives as differing levels of sincerity in mourning.
“This is the difference (between the Opposition and the BJP) that when Bhagwan Ram’s devotee and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Kalyan Singh, passed away, neither the Samajwadi Party nor the Congress leaders expressed condolences. But, they shed crocodile tears on a mafia’s death,” Yogi Adityanath said.
Mukhtar Ansari’s death
Mukhtar Ansari, the five-time former MLA from Mau, died on March 28 from a heart attack while he was in Banda jail. Following his death, many people, including leaders from the Samajwadi Party and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) headed by Asaduddin Owaisi, visited Yusufpur to offer condolences to his family. The circumstances surrounding Ansari’s death have sparked political debates, with demands for openness and responsibility being voiced by members of various political parties.
Mukhtar Ansari had more than 60 criminal cases against him, of which 15 were on murder charges. He joined a gang in the 1980s and formed his own in the 1990s. The gang was involved in extortion and kidnapping in the Mau, Ghazipur, Varanasi and Jaunpur districts.
Ansari was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in April 2023 for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai by an MP MLA court. He was sentenced to life in prison on March 13, 2024, in connection with a fake arms license case.
Following the assassination of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2007, criminal charges were levelled against Ansari and his sibling, Afzal Ansari. The attack on Krishnanand Rai took place in 2005. On November 29, 2005, while returning from an event, Krishnanand Rai was ambushed, with his vehicle being riddled with bullets from an AK-47 rifle. Approximately 500 rounds were discharged, leading to the fatalities of Krishnanand Rai and seven others. Rai himself suffered about 67 bullet wounds. Shockingly, the assailants went further by decapitating Krishnanand Rai. Ansari was implicated in the murder. Mukhtar Ansari allegedly not only got Rai killed, he even had his braid chopped as evidence of his murder.
