Sam Pitroda, a close aide to the Gandhi family, once again found himself at the centre of controversy due to his controversial remarks. Pitroda’s recent statement, where he remarked that “people on the east look like the Chinese and those of the south look like Africans,” has sparked outrage and criticism from various quarters.
It is not the first time that Sam Pitroda has has hogged the limelight for stoking controversy by making highly irresponsible nad racist remarks. Pitroda’s history of contentious remarks includes downplaying the severity of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and questioning the effectiveness of the Balakot air strikes. His suggestion that temples will not solve the bigger issues which Bharat is facing also spraked row.
Racist Remark By Sam Pitroda
During an interview, Sam Pitroda sparked row when he said, “People on the east look like Chinese, people on the west look like Arab, people on the North look like whites, and maybe people on the south look like Africans.” Though the Congress distanced itself from his remarks, it reignited a political feud, highlighting sensitivity surrounding issues of diversity and identity in Bharat. Having faced strong backlash, Sam Pitroda resigned as chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress
Sam Pitroda’s Remarks On Inheritance Law Stirred Row
Merely two weeks ago, Sam Pitroda, advocated for a US-style inheritance tax law in India. He said, “In America, there is an inheritance tax. If one has 100 million USD worth of wealth and when he dies, he can only transfer probably 45 per cent to his children, 55 per cent is grabbed by the government. That’s an interesting law. It says you, in your generation, made wealth, and you are leaving now, you must leave your wealth for the public, not all of it, half of it, which to me sounds fair,” Pitroda stated.
Inheritance tax, also known as estate tax, is a state levy on the assets an individual receives as part of an inheritance. While the US does not have a central inheritance tax, some states impose it.
Facing backlash from political circles, Pitroda clarified on April 24 that his comments were twisted to “deflect attention” from the core issues. However, his clarification came after the Congress party once again distanced itself from his remarks, and BJP leaders criticised both Pitroda and his party.
PM Narendra Modi came down heavily on the Congress party and Pitroda for adopting the policy of appeasement and trying to take the wealth that belonged to the Hindus and redistribute it among the Muslims.
Hua To Hua Remark On 1984 Riots
During the Lok Sabha elections in May 2019, Sam Pitroda sparked controversy with his dismissive remarks on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Pitroda’s response, “So what?” to a question about former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s alleged involvement in the riots, triggered widespread criticism and a political storm.
“Ab kya hai ’84 ka? Aapne kya kiya 5 saal mein, uski baat kariye. ’84 mein hua to hua,” Pitroda stated, implying that the events of 1984 were irrelevant compared to contemporary issues like job creation and urban development.
It was at that point in time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi seized upon Pitroda’s remarks, linking them to Rahul Gandhi and accusing the Congress party of insensitivity towards the victims of the riots. Rahul Gandhi, in response, condemned Pitroda’s comments and called for an apology.
The fallout from Pitroda’s remarks highlighted the sensitivity of the issue surrounding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which remains a deeply emotive and politically charged subject in India’s history.
Pitroda’s statement not only drew criticism from political opponents but also stirred debate within the Congress party, with calls for accountability and acknowledgment of past injustices.
Sam Pitroda’s Irresponsible Remarks Questioning Credibility Of Balakot Airstrikes By Indian Armed Forces
In February 2019, Sam Pitroda, stirred controversy by questioning the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Balakot air strikes following the Pulwama terror attack. Pitroda’s remarks, which downplayed the significance of the strikes and advocated for dialogue with Pakistan, drew sharp criticism.
“I don’t know much about attacks. It happens all the time. An attack happened in Mumbai also. We could have then reacted and just sent our planes, but that is not the right approach. According to me, that’s not how you deal with the world,” Pitroda remarked, questioning the need for evidence of the IAF’s operation.
His comments, dismissing the need for a robust response to cross-border terrorism, provoked a swift reaction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who accused the Congress party of prioritising vote bank politics over national interests. Modi’s response underscored the sensitivity of national security issues and the need for a united front to combat terrorism.
Pitroda’s stance, advocating for dialogue and caution in attributing blame to an entire nation for the actions of a few, ignited a debate on India’s foreign policy approach and its response to terrorist attacks. His remarks also fueled political tension, with PM Modi targeting Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party for their stance on national security matters.
Sam Pitroda Calls Middle Class “Selfish” on NYAY Scheme
In April 2019, Sam Pitroda stirred controversy within the Congress party by urging the middle class to be more generous and willing to contribute towards funding the party’s proposed NYAY scheme. Pitroda’s comments, made during a TV interview, suggested that the middle class should not be selfish and should be prepared to pay higher taxes to support the guaranteed minimum income scheme for impoverished households.
These remarks sparked a heated debate within the party, with senior leaders like former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Rahul Gandhi responding to address concerns. Chidambaram reassured that there would be no additional tax burden on the middle class, while Gandhi clarified that the NYAY scheme’s funding would not be sourced from increased taxes imposed on the people.
Sam Pitroda’s Dismal Remark On How Temples Would Create Jobs
In June 2023, Sam Pitroda ignited controversy yet again with his comments suggesting that temples would not address India’s pressing issues such as unemployment, inflation, education, and health. Pitroda made these remarks during an event in the US, attended by Rahul Gandhi, where he expressed scepticism about the focus on religious matters over socio-economic concerns.
His statement drew criticism from BJP leaders, who accused Pitroda and Rahul Gandhi of being ‘Hinduphobic’. It was at that point in time that Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir was in the final stages of completion, and the country was gearing up for the Pran Pratishtha that was scheduled for January 22, 2024. However, the Congress party swiftly distanced itself from Pitroda’s remarks, stating that his comments did not represent the party’s official stance.

In January 2024, Sam Pitroda’s statement suggesting that Jawaharlal Nehru contributed more to the drafting of the Constitution than BR Ambedkar sparked controversy, leading the BJP to label the Congress as ‘anti-Dalit.’ Pitroda shared an article by Sudheendra Kulkarni, a former aide of BJP veteran LK Advani, supporting this assertion. The remark reignited debates about the role of key figures in shaping India’s Constitution and underscored the sensitive nature of discussions surrounding historical legacies and political narratives.
Once again, the Congress Party, distanced itself from the remarks made by Pitroda.
