Tamil Nadu: AIADMK leader acknowledges internal turmoil ahead of Lok Sabha results

AIADMK, Tamil Nadu's prominent political force, finds itself in a state of disarray even before the Lok Sabha election results are out. The party's general secretary, Edapadi K Palaniswamy (EPS), expressed dismay over what he described as a betrayal by party cadres, citing a lack of loyalty within the ranks

Amidst the anticipation surrounding the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections, AIADMK leader Edapadi K Palaniswamy (EPS) has made a candid admission, lamenting the lack of loyalty among party cadres. This revelation comes on the heels of earlier predictions by Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, who forecasted an impending leadership crisis within the AIADMK.

During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Annamalai continued to criticise Palaniswami, suggesting that the AIADMK would undergo a significant transformation post-election. Annamalai asserted, “After the party’s loss in 2024, the AIADMK will undergo a change in leadership. AIADMK will cease to exist, and its cadre will rally behind TTV Dhinakaran.”

The ongoing Lok Sabha elections, conducted in seven phases across the country, have recently concluded in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. As political parties in Tamil Nadu engage in introspection, the AIADMK convened a meeting at its office in Royapettah, Chennai, on April 23, 2024. Attendees included AIADMK candidates, office-bearers from Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Sriperumbudur, as well as District Secretaries and constituency in-charges.

During the meeting, executives briefed Edappadi Palaniswami on the challenges encountered during the election campaign, including opposition strategies. The discussions underscore the internal challenges faced by the AIADMK as it navigates the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

In a recent video circulating on social media, AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) voiced his concerns about the lack of loyalty and dedication among party executives. Speaking to executives for approximately 15 minutes, EPS highlighted several issues plaguing the party’s functioning.

Palaniswami lamented the decline in loyalty towards the present leadership compared to the eras of MGR and Jayalalithaa, noting a lack of ownership and dedication among some party functionaries. He pointed out instances of misuse of party funds and highlighted the failure to effectively communicate key issues such as increased taxes and charges under the DMK government during the election campaign.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the performance of party administrators, EPS emphasised the need for sincerity and dedication from party members, particularly during election campaigns. He criticised the reluctance of some stalwarts to contest elections, attributing it to fears of defeat at the hands of rival parties. Additionally, he raised concerns about the lack of financial investment from candidates and the inner turmoil within the party.

Palaniswami’s remarks also addressed the potential aftermath of the upcoming election results, predicting a possible disintegration of the party if it falls to third or fourth position. He highlighted the significance of the Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha Constituency, where AIADMK candidate O. Panneerselvam (OPS) contested as an independent backed by the BJP and its allies. EPS speculated that a victory for OPS could lead to disgruntled cadres rejoining his faction.

Critics have pointed out the AIADMK’s failed attempts to form a mega alliance after snapping ties with the BJP-led NDA in August last year. Despite efforts to rally support, only a few parties, including DMDK, SDPI, and Puthiya Tamizhagam, were willing to join the alliance. This setback, along with other perceived shortcomings in the party’s approach, has led to dissatisfaction among party leaders and members.
