On April 23, the Delhi Court extended the judicial custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, and alleged Aam Aadmi Party fund manager for Goa elections, Chanpreet Singh until May 7. This extension pertains to their involvement in a money laundering case associated with the now-defunct Delhi liquor policy case. Additionally, the Rouse Avenue court prolonged Kavitha’s judicial custody until May 7 in a separate case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning the same defunct policy. All three defendants were virtually presented before the court for these proceedings.
This decision follows the court’s rejection of the Aam Aadmi Party convenor’s plea seeking 15 minutes of daily medical consultation with his doctor, in the presence of his wife Sunita Kejriwal.
Responding to Kejriwal’s health apprehensions, the court instructed Tihar jail officials to guarantee essential medical care. Additionally, it mandated the provision of special consultations, if needed, through a medical board led by the AIIMS director, comprising experts in endocrinology and diabetology.
On April 22 evening, Kejriwal experienced a spike in his blood sugar levels, prompting Tihar jail authorities to administer a “low dose” of insulin. The AAP welcomed the development, attributing it to the blessings of Hanuman Jayanti.
Kejriwal’s arrest on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) followed the Delhi High Court’s refusal to grant him protection from coercive action by the central agency.
While Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, remains in judicial custody, she is embroiled in cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation. The CBI apprehended the Telangana Member of Legislative Council (MLC) from Tihar Jail, where she was detained subsequent to her arrest by the ED in a money laundering case.
In a separate development, the ED apprehended Chanpreet Singh, the alleged fund manager for Aam Aadmi Party’s funds during the Goa assembly elections 2022. His arrest relates to funds procured through alleged bribes in the Delhi liquor policy case.
