112-year-old Mumbai woman champions civic duty, prefers to vote at polling booth over home ballot

At 112 years old, Kanchanben Badshah, a resident of South Mumbai, is setting an inspiring example by exercising her right to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha election on May 20. Refusing the option to vote from home, she insists on going to the polling booth to cast her vote despite her age.

The Election Commission had announced a provision for door-to-door voting for individuals above 85 years, but Kanchanben declined the offer, showcasing her unwavering commitment to participate in the democratic process. Impressed by her determination, the nodal officer from the Election Commission, Nayana Pawar, along with her team, felicitated and honored Kanchanben for her exemplary dedication.

Having witnessed numerous historic events such as independence, partition, and world wars, Kanchanben now urges young people to actively engage in the electoral process. In an interview with media, she emphasised the importance of voting and questioned the impact of neglecting crucial votes on the state of affairs.

Kanchanben’s grandson, Parind Badsha, highlighted her belief in the significance of physically going to the polling booth to inspire others. He shared that Kanchanben’s preference for voting in person stems from her belief that it encourages others to follow suit. During her previous voting experience, people even requested selfies with her, illustrating her influence and admiration within the community.

Despite the offer of voting from home, Kanchanben remained steadfast in her decision to visit the polling booth, much to the appreciation of election officials. Her determination to fulfill her civic duty in every election Mumbai has witnessed is commendable and serves as a testament to her commitment to democracy.

Born in 1912, Kanchanben has faced personal challenges, including the loss of her husband and outliving her three children. Currently residing in the Breach Candy area of South Mumbai with her grandsons, Parind and Jignesh, she continues to inspire others with her resilience and dedication to exercising her right to vote.
