Guwahati: In the heart of Assam, amidst the scenic beauty of the Brahmaputra, a love story intertwined with civic duty unfolded on a momentous day. Fungchur Narzary and Dulumoni Basumatary, newlyweds from the quaint village of Daimalu in Gohpur town in Sonitpur district, chose to celebrate their wedding day not just with festivities and merriment, but with a profound act of citizenship. In a touching display of commitment to their nation’s democratic principles, the couple embarked on a journey to the polling station, casting their votes amidst the backdrop of their wedding celebrations.

Against the backdrop of jubilant wedding festivities, Fungchur and Dulumoni emerged as beacons of civic engagement, underscoring the importance of participating in the electoral process. Their decision to prioritise their democratic duty resonated deeply with the spirit of the occasion, symbolising their unwavering belief in the transformative power of every citizen’s vote.

With determination etched on their faces, Fungchur and Dulumoni made their way to the polling station at Daimalu Boro of Gohpur M. E. School. Standing in line alongside fellow citizens, they epitomised the essence of responsible citizenship, demonstrating that no celebration is complete without honouring one’s civic responsibilities.

Their actions serve as a poignant reminder of the significance of active participation in shaping the future of the nation. As they embark on the journey of marriage together, Fungchur and Dulumoni have not only forged a bond of love but have also set a remarkable precedent for civic engagement and responsible citizenship, inspiring others to follow suit.

In the broader context of Assam’s electoral landscape, their act of participation coincided with the first phase of polling in the state, held on April 19th. Across five constituencies—Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Sontinpur, Jorhat, and Kaziranga—voters exercised their democratic right with fervour. Notable candidates, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BJP sitting MP Pradan Baruah, Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, former state BJP president Ranjit Dutta, Congress leader Gaurab Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi vied for electoral success, embodying the democratic spirit that Fungchur and Dulumoni embraced wholeheartedly.

As the day unfolded, official data revealed a turnout of nearly 60 percent of voters by 3 PM, indicating a robust engagement with the electoral process.
