Police in Chhattisgarh have registered as many as two cases against the Congress party’s senior leader and ex-minister in the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government, Kawasi Lakhma, in Bijapur district on Friday, April 12.
Lakhma, who is also the party’s candidate from the Maoist-affected Bastar Lok Sabha seat was booked after he stirred a controversy with his derogatory remarks against Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi during a public meeting in Mirtur, Bijapur, on April 8.
According to the details, an FIR against Lakhma was filed in the Mirtur police station of Bijapur for organising a public meeting without prior permission from the authorities and making objectional remarks against the PM subsequently. At the same time, a separate FIR has also been lodged against Lakhma in the Kutru police station for his alleged comment on the police and administration on the same day.
Lakhma was booked under sections 188 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the People Act 1951 for allegedly violating the model code of conduct, informed authorities.
As per the details of the complaints filed against Lakhma at Kutru police station, Lakhma at the rally allegedly asked the villagers to attack the police personnel with their traditional weapons, such as bows and arrows, citing that the police team was recently taking measurements of an area near Tongpal of Sukma, which has a reserve of Tin.
Earlier, Lakhma, while addressing a public gathering in Mirtur, Bijapur, also made objectionable remarks against PM Modi. In the rally held on April 8, Lakhma, while interacting with the audience in the local Gondi dialect, remarked that ” Lakhma will win and Modi will die,” stirring controversy over his below-the-belt remark.
The remarks made by the former Congress minister have now sparked a huge political row in the poll-bound State where the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) leaders have come out all guns blazing on the Congress Lok Sabha candidate from the much-hyped Bastar constituency.
Reacting to the comments made by Lakhma, BJP MLA from Dharsiwa, Anuj Sharma in a video posted on social media platform X said, “that the Congress Party has gone to a new low in terms of political morality as while one of their leaders says that one should break Modi’s head the other says that he shall die.”
The Congress has sensed its defeat in the upcoming elections, it knows that it will bite the dust in all the eleven seats of Chhattisgarh and the BJP will form a government with a thumping majority, I strongly condemn these lousy comments and would like to alert these leaders of the Congress party that they should think twice and refrain from making such comments about the most praised leader of the world. The people of Chhattisgarh will give them a befitting reply in the elections, added Sharma.
Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh BJP state unit in a separate post on X has also alleged that the regular occurrence of such statements from Congress leaders indicates a grave conspiracy. Taking to the X, the BJP state unit while enlisting a few recent incidents alleged that these statements suggest a deeper conspiracy.
The post recalls an incident during the State assembly polls-time where an alleged Maoist sympathiser, Sarju Tekam while addressing a gathering in the presence of the local Congress MLA remarked that if the BJP people dare to come in these areas for campaigning, they should be hacked. It further claimed that a daily newspaper has recently reported that the Maoists are threatening the people to vote for the Congress party.
It is worth mentioning here that this is the second incident in recent times where a senior leader of the Congress party from Chhattisgarh has made objectional remarks on PM Modi and earlier, former cabinet minister and senior leader of the party Charan Das Mahant also sparked a row after he remarked that “Modi’s head should be broken with a wooden stick.”
