Once again, the flames of unrest engulf Bengal, a state perpetually caught in turmoil. Recent years have seen it making unwelcome appearances in news headlines, and on Saturday, April 6th, it bore witness to another distressing event. An Islamist mob launched an attack on Hindus playing devotional songs, leaving many severely injured.

The attack was captured in haunting visuals that were spread across social media platforms, particularly X, where they garnered significant attention. The scenes depicted an area marred by towering flames, serving as a stark testament to the violence that had unfolded.

Details emerging from the incident shed light on the sequence of events. On April 6, Hindus were en route to immerse the murti of Maa Raksha Kali, a revered practice within their religious tradition. They were on their way for the immersion with the melodious bhajans of Sri Ram Bhajans. However, this display of faith and togetherness proved intolerable to the Islamists, who, launched a brutal assault on them.

Shanku Deb Panda, BJP’s State Spokesperson, expressed grave concerns to Organiser, highlighting the distressing situation unfolding in Diamond Harbour, a constituency represented by Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishiek Banerjee. Panda drew attention to the plight of Hindus in the area, emphasising the targeted nature of the violence.

Referring to recent remarks made by Mamata Banerjee he added, “A day before, Mamata Banerjee said, Ram Navami is coming and there can be unrest in the state and the next day, Hindus get attacked. These people were carrying out an immersion procession of Maa Kali, wearing saffron dress. This act of devotion, however, became the pretext for an assault by Islamist aggressors.”

Panda lamented the dire consequences of the attack, citing reports of Hindu homes being set ablaze and describing the region’s situation as critical. Despite efforts by the police to establish control, including the imposition of restrictions akin to a cantonment, incidents of violence persisted. Notably, even the residence of their Mandal President fell victim to the aggression, with Panda claiming to possess CCTV footage documenting the assault.

In light of these developments, Panda raised pertinent questions about the efficacy of Mamata Banerjee’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections in the state, casting doubt on her ability to maintain order and protect the rights of all citizens.

He said, “Is this how Mamata Banerjee is going to conduct free and fair elections in the state?”

“She is using the government machinery, from DM to police inspector, each one of them has been appointed because of their links with TMC. This is simply unacceptable; we cannot go there to meet our people, we cannot even ask questions, is it India or some other country?” he questioned.

Hindu activist Devdutta Maji told Organiser that, “On the night of the attack, the Islamists were irked with Hindus playing Ram Bhajan. They intentionally targetted those wearing saffron attires. Following the attack, the police detained several Hindus and have been searching their houses in an inappropriate manner,” he added.

He wrote on X, “Hindus were playing devotional songs of Prabhu Shree RAM while on their way to immerse MAA RAKSHA KALI Moorti (Puja was on Saturday Night). Suddenly, a few JIHADIS attacked them and many Hindus were badly injured.”

His post further read, “It is evident that this was a pre-planned attack. Rapid Action Force has been deployed by WB Police. TMC Block President Sk Shamim had sent over 100 Jihadis on motorbikes. On the other hand Sk Jahangir Khan’s bike army of Jihadis from Falta moved towards Sarisha. To protect the lives and honour of their women and girls, Hindus should always be ready to fight and neutralise any type of aggression.”

“Though the Hindus it seems have given a befitting response to the atrocities meted out to them. No use of performing Puja if you cannot fight the Devil’s,” his post concluded.

Also, Amit Thakur, a BJP party worker in Bengal wrote on X, “HINDUS UNDER ATTACK. Place – Kalagachiya, Sarisha, DIAMOND HARBOUR, South 24 Pgns West Bengal. Hindus were playing devotional songs of Prabhu Shree RAM while on their way to immerse MAA RAKSHA KALI Moorti (Puja was on Saturday Night). Suddenly a few Anti Socials attacked them and many Hindus are badly injured. In the police operations, only Hindus have been arrested.”

Significantly, the Maa Raksha Kali puja holds deep significance for Hindus, marking the fulfillment of their wishes. Typically, devotees bring a murti of Maa Kali, engaging in rituals such as jagran, keertan, and puja, culminating with the immersion of the murti in sacred waters on the following day. The Puja is usually observed on Saturdays. The duration of this puja may vary, extending to two or three days, depending upon the preferences of the organisers.

Tragically, a Hindu family in Kalagachiya organised this revered puja, only to face an attack perpetrated by Islamists.
