Baltimore Bridge Collapses in wake of ship collision; several feared dead

A tragic incident occurred in Baltimore, Maryland when the Francis Scott Bridge, an integral part of the city’s infrastructure was struck by a containership, on the early morning of March 26, 2024. Shocking footage revealed the moment the bridges steel arches disintegrated and plunged into the Patapsco River around 1:30 AM.

While the exact number of vehicles present on the 1.6-mile-long bridge at the time of collision remains uncertain, the Baltimore City Fire Department reported that at least seven people were thrown into the river. Kevin Cartwright, the director of the communications fire department said, “The dive and rescue team arrived on the scene to locate the individuals.”

The calamitous event was captured in real time and shared live on a YouTube livestream depicting the bridge succumbing to the waters below, a New York Post said. The aftermath prompted an immediate response from the US Coast Guard and the Maryland Transportation Authorities though details have from the authorities were sparse initially.

The collision not only compromised the bridge integrity and but also resulted in several vehicles plunging into the water below. The Baltimore City Police having been alerted to the incident at 1:35 AM, reported possible persons in the river sparking immediate efforts.

Kevin Cartwright from the Baltimore Fire Department described the scenes as developing mass casualty event with efforts focused on the rescuing at least seven individuals reported to be in reported to be in water following the bridge partial collapse.

Following the incident, the MTA had to shut down the interstate lanes in both directions significantly disrupting traffic flows and causing major detours. Cartwright further mentioned the precarious situation at the collapse site noting that some cargo or retainers hanging from the bridge which presents additional risks to the already dangerous conditions. Emergency responders facing an unstable environment are proceeding with extreme caution to navigate the wreckage and aid potential survivors.

As dawn broke, the full extent of the damage remained uncertain with early reports from media outlets such as the New York Times and Fox Baltimore suggesting significant structural loss.

The Francis Scott Bridge, a vital artery opened in 1977 now faces an uncertain future as investigations continue into the cause of the collision and subsequent collapse. Social media and news outlets have circulated dramatic footage showing large sections of bridge submerged although official confirmations and details are still forthcoming.
