On March 23, 1931, the echoes of defiance reverberated as three valiant souls—Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru—embraced the gallows, marking a pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence. Today, on the solemn occasion of Balidan Diwas, the nation bows its head in reverence, commemorating the indomitable spirit and sacrifice of these revered revolutionaries.

Born on September 28, 1907, in the erstwhile Punjab province, Bhagat Singh emerged as a beacon of courage and conviction at a tender age. Renouncing formal education in pursuit of liberation, he embarked on a revolutionary path fueled by intellectual vigor and unyielding patriotism. Alongside his compatriots, Sukhdev and Rajguru, Bhagat Singh orchestrated audacious acts of defiance against British tyranny, inspiring generations to come.

The genesis of their martyrdom traces back to December 1928, when Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru orchestrated the assassination of Superintendent James Scott in Lahore, seeking retribution for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. Despite a case of mistaken identity resulting in the demise of Assistant Superintendent John Saunders, their resolute determination remained undeterred.

In April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt hurled bombs in the Central Assembly Hall in Delhi, punctuating their protest with the fervent cry of “Inquilab Zindabad!” Their arrest marked a pivotal juncture in the annals of India’s struggle, igniting a flame of resistance that would endure through the ages.

The culmination of their defiance unfolded on March 23, 1931, as Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru ascended the gallows with unflinching resolve, embodying the quintessence of sacrifice for a noble cause. The Lahore Conspiracy Case bore witness to their unwavering commitment to the motherland, etching their names in the annals of India’s freedom struggle with indelible ink.

Today, as the nation pays homage to these stalwarts of liberty, their legacy resonates across every corner of the land. Their valorous deeds serve as a beacon of inspiration, galvanising the youth to uphold the ideals of freedom, justice, and equality. In commemorating Balidan Diwas, India reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the principles for which Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru laid down their lives.

Amidst solemn ceremonies and fervent tributes, both public and private, the nation pauses to reflect on the sacrifices made by these immortal heroes. From government-sponsored events to grassroots initiatives, the spirit of Balidan Diwas permeates the collective consciousness, fostering a sense of unity and resolve in the quest for a brighter, more equitable future.

Let us remember with reverence the valiant souls who paved the way for India’s tryst with destiny. In honouring their memory, we reaffirm our commitment to building a nation worthy of their sacrifice – a nation where freedom reigns supreme, and justice prevails for all eternity.
