The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in a significant development, has extended the deadline for submitting PhD project reports in response to the enormous number of pleas filed by research scholars. This decision is being seen as a huge relief for the academic community. CSIR fellowship upgradation, extension, and continuation. The decision has been made after months of advocacy by research scholars.

CSIR decided to end the fellowships of approximately 300 PhD scholars earlier this year. The reason is the failure of research fellows to submit annual progress reports to the CSIR Human Resource Development Group (HRDG). Thus, in response to continuous appeals from the All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA), the CSIR was urged to address this critical issue.

As per the latest CSIR order dated March 1, 2023, the authority has granted relaxation to the Research Fellows and Associates whose assessment dates fall between March 1, 2020, to February 29, 2024. Such candidates are allowed to submit their documents for upgrades, extensions/continuations, as applicable, till August 31, 2024.

In India, CSIR is an elite scientific research organisation that provides fellowships and support to nationwide researchers who wish to pursue doctoral studies. Earlier, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted academic timelines, that led to delays in research progress and affected the completion of PhD projects. Keeping in view the unique challenges that are faced by the research scholars, CSIR has finally decided to relax the process of submitting project reports.

As we all know, CSIR fellowship is crucial for supporting the research scholars in their pursuit of advanced research. Any kind of unforeseen delay or hindrance can have consequences and affect their academic as well as professional growth.

The decision made by CSIR showcases its commitment to nurturing talents. By offering the time extension, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) aims to reduce the burden on the scholar’s shoulders.

Furthermore, CSIR strongly recommends that fellows and institutions adhere to the new schedule and submit their research reports promptly. Research fellows should avoid any further delays.

Challenges Faced by Research Scholars

Due to COVID-19, a multitude of challenges were faced by research scholars. Ranging from lab closures, restricted access to libraries and other resources, these have led to delays in collection of data and hampered their research projects. Adding to this, the uncertainty that surrounds the timeline for completing a doctoral degree also creates anxiety and stress on research scholars who rely on CSIR fellowships for help and monetary assistance.

Moreover, the uncertainties and challenges faced by scholars have taken a toll on their mental health. The pressure to meet the academic deadlines led to stress and burnout among the research scholars. CSIR’s decision on date extension is a massive relief that addresses the mental well being of the research community.

The news of the extended deadline for submitting PhD reports has led to widespread relief and appreciation from the academic community. Research scholars are expressing gratitude to CSIR for recognising their challenges and taking a responsive approach to this issue.

Multiple academic, research groups have welcomed and supported this decision and emphasised the relevancy of such measures taken by CSIR. The move is seen as a positive step towards fostering a supportive and understanding environment for researchers.

CSIR’s decision to grant relaxation acts as an example for other organisations to consider similar measures, if ever required. The extension move showcases a compassionate and understanding approach towards the difficulties that are faced by the academic community.
