Rahul Gandhi in dock over his alleged lecture in “Cambridge University; Jesus College denies any official event

In a recent turn of events, the purported visit of Indian politician from Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi to the University of Cambridge, touted as a series of 'special lectures,' has been unveiled as a commercial endeavour, devoid of any official invitation from the esteemed institution

In a surprising turn of events, it has been revealed that Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the University of Cambridge, purportedly for ‘special lectures,’ was not an invitation from the esteemed university, as claimed by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. Instead, it appears to have been a paid external event at Jesus College, part of the University of Cambridge.

The controversy surrounding Gandhi’s visit began when veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced a break in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Nyay Jodo Yatra, citing his visit to the United Kingdom. Ramesh claimed that Gandhi had been invited by the University of Cambridge to deliver two lectures on February 27 and February 28.

However, inconsistencies arose as social media users scrutinised the university’s official channels, finding no recent updates or tweets about Rahul Gandhi. The last mention dates back to May 2022. Additionally, the Judge School of Business, also part of the university, posted about an event featuring Gandhi in February 2023.

Further investigation revealed that the’special lecture’ actually took place at the Jesus College of the University of Cambridge. According to a report in the media house it was discovered that Rahul Gandhi spoke at the Elena Hall, a conference room at Jesus College. The college’s administration, responding to queries from a media house, clarified that the event was a commercial booking and had no involvement in its organisation or financing.

This is a big expose : Jesus College confirmed that Rahul Gandhi had not received an official invite from #CambridgeUniversity – it was a paid event. Here’s the proof : https://t.co/ONCJTtLtmx pic.twitter.com/pI70G6dVEb

The insignia visible in the images is that of Jesus College, not Cambridge University. The coat of arms in the background distinctly identifies the location as Jesus College, debunking claims that Rahul Gandhi was lecturing at the main Cambridge University.

This revelation contradicts Congress loyalist Shantanu’s tweet, suggesting that Rahul Gandhi was officially invited to speak at the University of Cambridge. The Indian Overseas Congress also attempted to create the illusion of an official invitation by sharing old images and misleading captions on social media.

The Indian Overseas Congress went as far as deleting a tweet when social media users pointed out the inconsistency without offering any apology or clarification.

OpIndia took the initiative to write to the administration of Jesus College, asking specific questions about the event, including when the conference room was booked, who organised the event, and whether the college administration invited Rahul Gandhi to speak. The response received from the college confirmed the commercial nature of the event and debunked Congress’s claims.

In light of these revelations, it becomes evident that Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the University of Cambridge was not for an officially invited ‘special lecture.’ Instead, it appears to have been a commercial event, raising questions about the Congress party’s attempt to portray it as an academic engagement.

This incident adds to the list of mysterious foreign visits by Rahul Gandhi, often coinciding with strategic moments for the Congress party. The lack of transparency and the misleading information shared by party members only fuel skepticism and raise concerns about the party’s credibility.

What is the nexus between Jesus College, Cambridge University, and the Chinese Communist Party?

In a viral tweet certain questions have also arisen about the association of Jesus College with China’s Communist Party and the timing of the visit of Rahul Gandhi. The recent invitation to Jesus College, Cambridge, right before the elections and amidst his Bharat Jodo Yatra, casts a spotlight not just on him but on the college’s dubious ties with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Why would a prominent leader choose this moment and this institution for his lecture? This visit is not an isolated event but a symbol of a deeper, more troubling narrative.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Jesus College has become all the more questionable because it is associated with the CCP Training Programme. This programme facilitates exchanges and training with individuals who are associated with the CCP, raising alarms about the potential for undue influence and intellectual compromise. The suspicion needles turn around Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party as to why they do not see any issue with engaging closely with an institution that plays host to such programmes, or is it in conflict with such ideology?

How could Congress and Rahul Gandhi associate themselves with an institution that is funded by companies deeply intertwined with the Chinese Communist Party?

Jesus College receives funding from CCP

Apart from Huawei, Jesus College also received a £200,000 grant directly from the Chinese government in 2018 to its Global Issues Dialogue Centre (GIDC).

Another point that needs to be highlighted is how can Congress and its leader can associate themselves with an organisation that has the presence of academics like Prof. Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard, accused of whitewashing the CCP’s image, adding another layer of controversy to the China-funded Jesus College.

Prof. Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard

Rahul Gandhi’s recent engagement with Jesus College in Cambridge has ignited concerns, given the institution’s documented ties with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its recent strategic shift from the China Centre to the China Forum amidst funding controversies from Beijing. This raises serious questions about the decision of Rahul Gandhi and the Indian National Congress (INC) to associate with an institution embroiled in significant controversies over its connections with the CCP.

Past foreign visits of Rahul Gandhi marred by controversies

This is not the first time that Rahul Gandhi’s foreign visit has been embroiled in controversy. In the past, he has also visited abroad and spoken ill about Bharat. Last year, during one of the foreign tours, Rahul Gandhi stirred controversy when he called India a “Union of States.” The remarks made by Rahul Gandhi came at a time when India’s stature at the global front is at its peak and Bharat is leading from the front.

Last year, he questioned the conditions of the Muslims during the rule of the BJP. Union Minister Anurag Thakur had come down heavily on Rahul Gandhi and slammed him for forgetting the plight of the Dalits during the rule of the Congress party across the country during the 80s, when the Congress was in power.

On foreign tours, Rahul Gandhi also questioned the economic growth of the country without realising that Bharat is now among the leading economies of the world.

Therefore, seeing the past and present record of Rahul Gandhi, it is evident that his main aim was to malign the image of Bharat at the global arena without knowing the facts.
