The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) continued its black flag protests against Kerala Governor Dr. Arif Mohammed Khan in Mattannoor, Kannur district, on February 19. However, the protest took an unexpected turn when Governor Khan disembarked from his car and directly confronted the demonstrators.

In a bold move, Governor Khan challenged the SFI protesters, asserting that he would step out of his vehicle and protest wherever they staged black flag demonstrations. His defiant stance sent a clear message to the demonstrators, indicating his willingness to directly engage with them despite the confrontational nature of the protests.

Aware of the Governor’s route, the protesters strategically positioned themselves near the front row of the convoy, causing it to come to a halt. Subsequently, Governor Khan emerged from his vehicle and directly confronted the demonstrators, vowing to protest wherever his convoy was stopped. Security forces, including CRPF soldiers and Kerala Police personnel, encircled the Governor and escorted him back to his car.

Upon reaching Thiruvananthapuram, members of a self-styled Women’s Association staged black flag protests against the Governor, leading to police intervention to remove them from the scene.

In a continuation of the protests, reports indicate that the SFI staged another black flag demonstration in Mangalapuram, Thiruvananthapuram district, on February 20.

The persistent protests against Governor Khan suggest a determined effort by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) to disrupt his movements. Previous incidents have highlighted the leaking of the Governor’s itinerary to protesters, prompting heightened security measures and the deployment of Central forces to ensure his protection.

Critics have accused the Kerala police of being lenient towards the SFI demonstrators, raising concerns about the safety and security of government officials amidst escalating tensions.

As tensions continue to simmer, the ongoing clashes between student groups and government officials underscore the complex political landscape in Kerala, where dissent and activism intersect with governance and administration.
