A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary was brutally murdered by an unidentified gang in Madurai, sending shockwaves across the region. The victim, identified as Sakthivel, served as the district secretary of the OBC wing of the BJP in Madurai.

The tragic incident unfolded near the Vandiyur tollgate in the early hours of February 15, 2024, as Sakthivel was en route to his rice mill godown in the Sangu Nagar area. Sakthivel, a 34-year-old resident of Vandiyur Devar Kurinji Nagar in Anna Nagar, was also involved in running a rice mill in Chintamani and engaged in finance-related business activities.

According to initial reports, Sakthivel’s murder appears to be a result of ongoing animosity, particularly concerning his rice mill. Investigators are currently probing the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the motive and identify the perpetrators behind this heinous crime.

The tragic killing comes amidst escalating concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu, as highlighted by opposition parties and civic leaders. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief, Annamalai, has accused the state government led by Chief Minister Stalin of propagating factually misleading information, especially in the Governor’s address.

Sakthivel encountered the assailants on motorcycles, wielding deadly weapons, he attempted to flee. However, the attackers chased and cornered him, unleashing a vicious attack with power sickles that led to his untimely demise.

Upon receiving information about the crime, the Anna Nagar police swiftly arrived at the scene. They seized Sakthivel’s body and transferred it to the Madurai Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and a special task force has been mobilised to track down the perpetrators, who fled the scene on motorcycles.

Authorities are diligently analysing surveillance footage from major roads in the area in hopes of identifying the assailants and uncovering the motive behind the brutal attack.

Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the brutal murder of Sakthivel, the BJP functionary, could be tied to longstanding disputes. The conflicts, both related to his rice mill business and a recent disagreement over the sale of a cargo vehicle, are currently under scrutiny. Authorities are also exploring potential connections to financial dealings, adding complexity to the ongoing probe.

The news of Sakthivel’s demise prompted a large gathering of BJP functionaries and volunteers at the government hospital. In response to heightened tension, the police have increased their presence as a precautionary measure.
