Ayodhya, the once nondescript pilgrim centre, is poised for a monumental transformation in its hospitality sector, propelled by the recent inauguration of the Ram Mandir and the subsequent surge in devotee footfall. With investments totaling over Rs 4200 crores, the city’s skyline is set to undergo a drastic change, becoming a focal point for the hotel industry. The Uttar Pradesh Government, in collaboration with private players, is spearheading this endeavour, aiming to capitalise on Ayodhya’s newfound global prominence.

At the forefront of this initiative are the State tourism department and various private entities, which inked memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during the Uttar Pradesh Global Investors’ Summit in Lucknow. These MoUs outline plans for the construction of 142 hotels, catering to diverse clientele, from luxury seekers to budget-conscious travellers. The proposed hotels will vary in size, accommodating anywhere from 20 to 200 rooms, catering to the diverse needs of visitors flocking to Ayodhya.

Key players such as Shri RamKripa Hotels Pvt Limited, BEL, and Sun Infraengineering Pvt Ltd have committed substantial investments to develop high-quality accommodations in Ayodhya. Projects include 200-room hotels by Sri RamKripa Hotels Pvt Limited and BEL, each valued at Rs150 crores, and a 150-room hotel project by Sun Infraengineering Pvt Ltd, with an investment of Rs 175 crores. Notably, discussions with the Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company Ltd signal further upscale developments in the pipeline.

The impending groundbreaking ceremony in Lucknow on February 19 is expected to herald the commencement of these ambitious projects, with the number of proposed hotels likely to increase. These establishments will encompass a range of offerings, from upscale resorts to budget-friendly accommodations, reflecting Ayodhya’s evolving hospitality landscape.

Already, Ayodhya has witnessed the inauguration of several luxury hotels, such as the Park Inn by the Radisson group and Clarks Inn Express, signalling a shift towards modern amenities and services. Additionally, the development of Ayodhya-Lucknow bypass road has attracted significant investment, further enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourist destination.

The catalyst for Ayodhya’s metamorphosis can be traced back to the Supreme Court’s landmark judgement on November 9, 2019, paving the way for the construction of the Ram Mandir. Subsequent events, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the bhoomi pujan and consecration ceremonies, have galvanised efforts to revitalise the city’s infrastructure.

In line with this vision, the Uttar Pradesh Government has greenlit the New Ayodhya Township, a sprawling 1407-acre project aimed at decongesting the city and fostering sustainable urban development. Spearheaded by the housing and urban planning department, this initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to revitalising Ayodhya’s urban landscape.

With the inauguration of the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport and the Ayodhya Dham Junction railway station, coupled with ongoing infrastructure projects, Ayodhya is poised to emerge as a modern, vibrant city, seamlessly blending tradition with progress. As investors flock to capitalise on the city’s potential, Ayodhya’s journey from a humble pilgrim centre to a thriving metropolis is well underway, promising a bright future for residents and visitors alike.
