A woman Maoist carrying a reward of Rs1 lakh on her head surrendered before the police in Maoist-infested Malkangiri district of Odisha, informed the police in a press note released on Wednesday, January 10.
Ungi Madvi alias Roshni, a resident of Pitadaba village of Katekalyan police station limits of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh, turned herself before the Malkangiri police and surrendered.
Madvi joined the banned CPI Maoist in 2016 and was active as a party member in the Mehuwapadar Local Guerilla Squad (LGS) of Kanger Ghati Area Committee of the Darbha Division of the outlawed Maoist outfit. The divison operates under the Dandkaranya Special Zonal Committee of the proscribed outfit.
Ungi was carrying a bounty of Rs1 lakh on her head and chose to surrender before the police after getting disillusioned with the outlawed outfit, informed SP Malkangiri, Nitish Wadhwani in a media briefing.
It’s been reported that the establishment of the Company Operating Bases (COB) of Border Security Force in Mehupadar, Temurpalli, and Kartanpalli played a significant role in the surrender of the said woman cadre.
The surrender of the said cadre was inspired by the recent appeals made by Odisha’s Chief Minister and other top-level security officials, which have so far resulted in the surrender of a number of cadres and Maoist sympathisers in the region.
According to the information shared by the Odisha police as many as 21 active cadres of the banned Maoist outfit have surrendered before the police in the past two years by shunning the path of violence. Additionally, the collective efforts of the security forces have also led to the surrender of hundreds of Maoist sympathisers in the same period of time.

It is to be noted that apart from running persistent counter-insurgency operations in the Maoist-affected areas the personnel of the paramilitary force deployed in the insurgency-hit districts are also organising various civic action programmes with the aim of winning the hearts of the residents.
It is worth mentioning here that the paramilitary troops in these areas have been consistently organising free medical camps and distributing medicines, clothes, utensils, and sports items.
In addition to these efforts, personnel have conducted blood donation camps in various districts. The comprehensive programs also involve distributing school bags, LED lights, and stationary materials to support students pursuing their studies in these remote terrains, which were previously dominated by insurgents.
It is pertinent to mention here that in addition to the deployment of security forces and the opening of security camps, the local administration has also been carrying out development works on a war footing to ensure that the residents of these Maoist-affected districts get uninterrupted supply of basic necessities like electricity, roads and drinking water, ultimately effecting the lives of the locals in a positive way.
Security forces destroyed IED in Chaibasa
Meanwhile, the security forces in a separate operation launched in Chaibasa unearthed and destroyed an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Thursday, January 11.
According to the information shared by the Chaibasa police, a joint team of security forces comprising of personnel from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) had launched a search operation in the forest area under Maoist infested Giolkera police station limits, where they recovered and destroyed an IED, weighing 7kg.
The development occurred a day after the security forces in another operation unearthed and destroyed a similar IED, planted by the extremists in Musaffil police station limits in Chaibasa on Wednesday, January 10. The IED was weighed 5kg, informed the police.
