A coordination committee meeting was held between the Sukma police and the bordering Malkangiri police of Odisha at Sukma police headquarters on Thursday, January 4, according to reports.

According to the information received, the meeting was called in view of any possible disturbance carried out by the Maoists in the upcoming general elections of 2024.

The officials of both the bordering districts held discussion on a range of issues including preparedness to counter any possible untoward incident of the extremists during the elections, cross border operations against the insurgents and curbing other illegal activities such as drug trafficking by tightening the security at the inter-state check posts.

The meeting which was attendant by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sukma, Aakash Markam and ASP (operation) Malkangiri, Manoj Singh also witnessed discussion on establishing better coordination between the police of both the bordering district against Maoist and other criminals involved in smuggling of cannabis. The officials also held discussion on information sharing during the meetup.

It is to be noted, that the state of Chhattisgarh and the adjoining region affected by the Maoist insurgency are considered as sensitive zones for holding elections in view of which extra vigilant are usually maintained by the security forces to hold the election peacefully.

Earlier a number of incidents of violence was carried out by the extremist in the run up before the State assembly elections in the insurgency-hit State last year, where a number of civilians including political workers were killed.

Maoist involved in IED attack held in Bijapur

In other news, the Bijapur police in a counter insurgency drive launched in the forest of Ketulnaar police station limits have nabbed a seasoned Maoist on Thursday, January 04.

According to the reports, a Maoist involved in Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack was nabbed during a search operation launched by the personnel of District Reserve Guard (DRG). Its been reported that a number of cases have already been registered against the arrested accused.

It is worth mentioning here that the security forces have intensified the search operations in the insurgency-hit state of Chhattisgarh after the Maoist triggered a string of IED explosions in separate regions of the State in December last year.

The intensified search operations in the Maoist affected regions have ultimately resulted in arrest of a number of cadres while a number of active cadres of the outlawed group have chosen to part way with the groups due to rising pressure of the forces at the same time.
