A potential controversy reminiscent of past incidents in Kashi and Mathura was averted as Hindu Munnani intervened to protest against the clandestine installation of a Jesus statue in a prohibited area near Dhanushkodi. The Christian outfit responsible for the installation faced opposition from Hindu Munnani, prompting revenue officials to intervene and remove the statue. The timely protest by Hindu Munnani effectively diffused tensions and prevented an unauthorised religious installation in the sensitive region near Rameswaram.

The incident echoes past controversies, drawing parallels to the preservation of historical sites and the delicate balance of religious sentiments. Hindu Munnani activist Ramamurthy of Rameswaram revealed the covert installation of the Jesus statue in a dilapidated church building, strategically designed to transform the Hindu pilgrimage centre into a Christian site, akin to Velankanni in Nagapattinam.

Ramamurthy emphasized the historical significance of Dhanushkodi, a town devastated by a super cyclone in 1964. The remnants, including a railway station, post office, temples, and a few huts, stand as protected national monuments, preserving the memory of the natural calamity. The government has expressly prohibited new construction, renovations, or any alterations to maintain the area’s sanctity.

The sudden appearance of the Jesus statue raised concerns among Hindu Munnani activists, who viewed it as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peaceful coexistence in the region and convert it into a Christian tourist destination. The activists strongly condemned the act, pointing to the government’s selective response, noting the opposition faced by a Siva temple in Arichal Munai compared to the seemingly unimpeded installation of the Jesus statue.

Hindu Munnani urged the government to promptly remove the statue and uphold the established status quo, emphasising the importance of avoiding communal tensions and preserving national historical monuments from destruction.

Ramamurthy expressed gratitude for the success of the protests, highlighting the potential consequences if the encroachment had not been addressed. He underscored the connection between Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram to the epic Ramayana, portraying it as a duty to protect the sacred sites from what he referred to as “Abrahamic forces.”

The incident sheds light on the delicate balance between religious freedom, historical preservation, and communal harmony, emphasising the need for a vigilant approach to safeguarding the cultural and religious diversity of the nation.

As the government and stakeholders deliberate on the aftermath of this event, the broader conversation surrounding the protection of historical monuments, communal relations, and the responsibilities of the state in preserving cultural heritage continues to gain significance. The successful protest by Hindu Munnani stands as a testament to the collective efforts to uphold the sanctity of sacred sites and prevent actions that could potentially disrupt the harmony of diverse religious communities in the region.
