Guwahati: In a monumental development poised to redefine Assam’s industrial landscape, Tata Group is in the advanced stages of planning a state-of-the-art semiconductor processing plant in the region, marking a transformative investment of approximately Rs 40,000 crore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this groundbreaking news on December 8, highlighting the conglomerate’s formal application to the Centre for final approval, following constructive discussions with the state government.
The proposed electronic centre is slated to find its home in Jagiroad, strategically located just 55 kilometres from Guwahati, the largest city in Assam. The chosen site holds historical significance as the former location of the Nagaon paper mill under Hindustan Paper Corporation, which ceased operations in 2021. Post-closure, the Assam government’s Industrial Corporation Limited took ownership of the property, settling the paper mill’s dues and paving the way for a new chapter in industrial development.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed his optimism, emphasising the potential transformative impact of Tata Group’s substantial investment on the state’s industrial ecosystem. He revealed that Tata Electronics Ltd initiated preliminary discussions with the state government regarding the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant. Satisfied with the collaborative atmosphere and the state’s commitment to fostering industrial growth, Tata Group has taken the crucial step of seeking final approval from the Centre.
“We are in touch with the Centre, and we hope that the final approval will be given in a month or two,” stated the Chief Minister, underlining the potential for a significant infusion of capital into the state, setting the stage for accelerated industrialisation.
In addition to the impressive financial commitment, Tata Group has signalled its dedication to local talent development. CM Sarma disclosed that the conglomerate has approached the state government with a proposal to train 1,000 individuals, equipping them with the necessary skills for potential employment opportunities within the semiconductor unit. This move aligns seamlessly with Assam’s broader vision of nurturing indigenous talent and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
Highlighting the gravity of this development, the Chief Minister acknowledged the pivotal role played by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a social media post on X, CM Sarma expressed gratitude to PM Modi for his continuous guidance, recognising the contribution of the central government in steering Assam towards a new era of economic growth and technological advancement.
This ambitious project aligns harmoniously with the state’s forward-looking policies, as evidenced by the approval of the Assam Semiconductor Manufacturing and Electronic Production Policy by the state cabinet in August. This policy framework is designed to create a conducive environment for semiconductor manufacturing and electronic production, positioning Assam as a key player in India’s burgeoning electronics industry.
As the Tata Group awaits the final nod from the Centre, Assam anticipates not just a boost to its industrial landscape but a comprehensive transformation.
