Kochi:The first three ships in the series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC) built by Cochin Shipyard for the Indian Navy were launched.
The three ships were launched after completion of initial construction work. These ships will be equipped with advanced underwater weapons and sensors, and over 80 per cent indigenous content, Cochin Shipyard Limited said in press note
These vessels, constructed at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), were handed over in a ceremony at Kochi. This marks a noteworthy addition to CSL’s portfolio, renowned for building the first indigenously designed aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
The agreement for the construction of these vessels was signed between CSL and the Defence Ministry on April 30, 2019. As part of the contract, a total of eight vessels are to be built, with the recently handed over ASWCs being the first to join the Bharat Navy’s fleet. They are slated to replace the existing Abhay Class warships currently in service.
Designed specifically to counter submarine threats, engage in underground observation, and deploy mines, the ASWCs are equipped to navigate in shallow waters. These vessels boast dimensions of 78 meters in length and 11.36 meters in width, with a commendable speed of 25 nautical miles.
Bharat’s strategic focus on enhancing its defence capabilities is evident with the addition of these ASWCs. Positioned as the maritime guardian on the South, East, and West borders, the nation takes pride in relying on its own intelligence, capabilities, capacity, and power.
