Moulavi Abdul Hameed Sharaee, an Islamic preacher in Srilanka, in one his online speeches in Tamil Dawah Media YouTube channel made derogatory remarks against Bharatanatyam and attributed performing artists to be courtesans with intent to seduce the king.

These comments were made while commenting on Teachers Day celebrations at one of the Islamic schools, where men performed the Bharatanatyam. Commenting on this, he said “It is regrettable that men performed Bharatanatyam, a dance generally associated with Parathis, in front of students in a way that made them look like women. In the past, courtesans were referred to as “Parathis.” Bharatanatyam was once performed for the amusement of kings, with the implication that prostitutes would dance to create a sensual atmosphere for the kings.”.

These comments have sparked outrage, particularly among the cultural and artistic communities, with critics arguing that Sharaee’s statements perpetuate outdated stereotypes and disrespect a revered art form. Bharatanatyam, originating from South India, holds significant cultural and religious importance and is performed by both men and women as a sacred and traditional dance.

Following his statement massive backlash erupted among the Sri Lankan Hindus. Students of Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Batticaloa, held demonstrations condemning the derogatory remarks made by Moulavi Abdul Hameed Sharaee on Bharatanatyam. Students held placards demanding an apology from Moulavi for his disgusting remarks.

Sri Lankan human rights defender and civil social activist Thamotharam Pratheevan released a statement condemning the remarks and demanding an immediate apology from the Moulavi. Thamotharam Pratheevan also demanded authorities take stringent action against the Moulavi for making abusive remarks against Hindu culture. Sri Lankan Hindus shared posts in social media expressing their outrage.

Jammiyathul Ulama Council general secretary Asheik Arkam Nooramidh said, “we strongly condemn the Moulavi remark, which has hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Making speeches against other religions cultures and traditions is against Islam and we strongly condemn the  statement. A Muslim social media influencer named Shazna Zawahir posted a video criticising Abdul Hameed Sharaee for his remarks. Shazna Zawahir also spoke on how some Moulavi’s are frequently posting videos abusing and insulting Muslim women in the name of bayan.

Moulvi Abdul Hameed Sharaee uploaded a video on the Tamil Dawah Media channel after receiving criticism on social media, claiming that his intention was not to offend Hindus, but rather to quote Hindu scholars regarding Bharatanatyam. If the comment offended Hindus, he also expressed regret.
