In yet another case of an interfaith relationship, a man in his twenties, Rohit Sharma, is reported to have tragically ended his life in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand on October 25, passing away on November 2 after receiving treatment. The narrative takes a distressing turn as Rohit’s father filed a complaint against Alisha, his romantic partner, alleging a conspiracy by her and her family members in connection with his son’s demise, citing religious differences.
The accused and their family members are currently evading authorities. An FIR, lodged by Rohit’s father, Mahipal Sharma, on November 4 at the Patel Nagar police station, reveals disturbing details. Sharma contends that his 21-year-old son fell victim to Alisha’s deceitful affection, facing constant mistreatment from her family. Unaware of the unfolding turmoil, Sharma states that Rohit was subjected to emotional distress, with Alisha’s father, Imtiyaz, mother Reshma, and maternal uncle Nadeem allegedly resorting to physical violence against him. They even used to beat him up.
On October 25, he received a distressing call from his wife, conveying the alarming news that Rohit was unwell and had been hospitalized nearby. Upon consultation with doctors, it was revealed that Rohit had consumed a poisonous substance, leading to a critical condition that warranted admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tragically, on November 2, the doctors informed him of Rohit’s passing.
Subsequently, Sharma, upon learning more about Alisha and Rohit’s declining mental health from neighbours, called for decisive action against Alisha and her family. In line with his grievance, the accused and their family have been charged under IPC section 306 for abetment to suicide.
Sharma shared some screenshots with this corespondent where Alisha can be seen telling Rohit about her family members learning about their affair and deciding to marry her to someone else.
On November 16, Organiser contacted Sub-inspector Sanoj Kumar, the investigating officer in this case. He confirmed that the accused individuals are currently evading law enforcement, and police teams are actively working to apprehend them. The postmortem examination has been conducted, and the findings from it formed the basis for accepting the FIR in this case.
Organiser called Rohit’s father, Mahipal, on November 16, and he provided the following account:
Sharma: Yesterday, I went to court, and my lawyer informed me that he is working to obtain a copy of the postmortem report, which could lead to the arrest of the accused. Currently, the entire family has left town.
Correspondent: Where did they live?
Sharma: They were our neighbors in a community comprising both Hindu and Muslim families. Imtiyaz used to operate a vegetable cart in the market. Although originally from Bihar, he resides here with his family and brother-in-law.
Correspondent: When did you first learn about Alisha?
Sharma: On November 25, after consuming something, Rohit was unable to communicate. Upon checking his phone, we discovered a chat between him and Alisha, where she mentioned that her family had discovered their relationship and intended to marry her off to someone else. Rohit hurried to her house, and upon his return, he experienced vomiting and eventually fainted. In his pocket, my wife found a packet of rat poison. Despite Rohit’s job at an automobile shop, they used to visit Rishikesh and other places. This had been ongoing for several years without our knowledge.
Correspondent: Did his behaviour change?
Sharma: No, there were no noticeable changes. Even if there were, we all worked, and he returned home late. I hadn’t observed any significant alterations; he had become quieter in the past few weeks, that’s all.
Correspondent: Did Imtiyaz and his family blackmail you?
Sharma: After my son’s passing, the entire community supported us. Imtiyaz and his family left the same day Rohit consumed poison, deepening our suspicions about their involvement. They have taken my son’s life, and I want them to be held accountable and behind bars, asserted Sharma.
Correspondent: What is your profession?
Sharma: I work as a carpenter and am a father to four children—three sons and a daughter. Rohit had begun learning automobile repair, and we were pleased to have him contribute to the family. Unfortunately, my son is no longer with us because of that girl and her family members who, driven by religious hatred, took his life.
