Guwahati: In a sensational love jihad incident that took place in Sangsari near Guwahati, one state-level martial arts player, Urvashi Basumotary, was abducted by Rahul Ali and his friend on September 25. According to report, Urvashi, a national-level martial arts player representing Assam, was on her way to her college on September 25 when Rahul Ali and his friend abducted her in a four-wheeler from Guwahati.

They took her to Nalbari district and confined her for several days. In the meantime, her family lodged an FIR in Sangsari police station on September 26. Knowing about the police complaint, Rahul Ali brought Urvashi back to Guwahati and abandoned her in the Paltan Bazar area. The Latasil police station rescued her and accordingly handed her to the Sangsari police station. She was handed over to her parents and was produced in court on  October 3.

The victim’s mother said that Rahul Ali was introduced to her by her coach Safuqur Rahman. He introduced himself as Rahul only and they had a friendly relation. Later on, Urvashi came to know about his religion and wanted to end the relationship with him. But Rahul Ali started blackmailing her. He proposed to her several times and she refused every time. On September 25, when she was on her way to college, Rahul Ali and his friend abducted her. Accused Rahul Ali is absconding now. Sangsari police questioned Rahul Ali’s father Md. Ajmal and two of his friends. But the main culprit is still on run.

In another incident, a 16-year-old girl became the victim of love jihad in Lahowal town in Dibrugarh. The victim, the only daughter of father Anandi Sharma and mother Ramawati Devi. The minor victim was kidnapped by Rajak Ali of Margherita on September 4 while she was going to a friend’s house. The teenager was abducted on September 4 and police have yet to trace her. The Hindu Kranti Dal has called on the Dibrugarh police to take timely action in this regard. The victim’s family has already lodged a complaint with the Lahowal and Margherita police stations. If the police fail to rescue the girl within 24 hours, Hindu Kranti Dal vows to stage statewise protests against the menace of love jihad.

It should be mentioned that, The Assam Government is likely to introduce a bill in the state assembly in December to ban polygamy and a legislation to tackle inter-religious marriage by false identity which is commonly known as ‘love jihad’.

Earlier the CM said that Assam Police must develop SoPs (Standard Operating Procedure) to help it to probe ‘love jihad’, as the government is contemplating to provide legislative backing to ensure prosecution of accused held for polygamy and child marriages and inter religion marriage by false identity. He said in the wake of ‘love-jihad’, the police forces must be empowered with specific operating procedures to deal with the menace.
